    LOL thats nothing new...

My company sells those 3D printers, called Dimension by Stratasys.

I print on these all the times for conceptual parts, that I design, from throttle bodies, cars, cell phone to guitars. etc.

The technology is FDM (fused deposition modeling) it pretty much works like a hot glue gun. The tips inside of the printer head, heat up, melt down the plastic and prints the plastic layer by layer on top of each layer. The plastic used in the model shown is ABS plastic. Same plastic used on keyboards, tv remotes etc.
The benefit to these machines is rapidprototyping for form, fit and function, while being able to print moving parts.

if anyone has questions feel free to ask.
you can see more on my companies website, including the same vid you posted

Btw the smaller printing machines cost $15,000, the one in the vid goes up to $40,000, and there are higher ends, that $250,000

how the hell does the scanner know when there is a non unified surface that touches? Such as, the gears rolling over other gears? I mean, they are touching-so why doesn't the laser just see those as one piece?

my thought exactly...that whole steam engine replica built as one piece sitting inside that machine, built up of layers upon layers of plastic, voids between moving parts..The only thing i can figure is that it 'builds' the layers just like a CAT scanning machine 'takes them apart', so to speak.

the next engine 3D scanner is a decent system at most. What they didnt show in the vid, is the front end 3D design you have to do to touch up the scan.

The 3D scanner works, by scan point cloud or mesh data of the 3D object and then takes a digital picture of the objects to display the object as shown. Now the user has to align all of the point cloud/mesh data and convert it into a surface then a solid, using programs such as solidworks, solidthinking, or rapid works.

Once that is done, an .STL file is created and sent to the 3D printer. The 3D printer uses a print driver that allows you to set up and layout the part as you see fit. This driver also recognizes spacing in multi-body parts. This spacing is printed with a water soluable supporrt material instead of the ABS plastic that the part is printed with. Dissolve the support and the part interacts

We have printed working shocks, adjustable wreches and pinion gear setup. All of the parts move as they should.

cooooooool. I thought about that after posting it. That the user had to define stuff in the 3d program. Pretty freakin rad, man!
