computer geeks need help
Ok i have an old computer and i need to know if it is cheaper to upgrade certain components so that I can run a few programs I want or if I should just get a whole new Tower.
I have 1.0 ghz and need at least 2
I have 128 mb ram I need 512
my video card is fine, i have an 80 gb hard drive no problems there.
So let me know how hard is it to upgrade those components and if it would be cheaper to do it myself or just buy a new computer.
Thanks...Last edited by Firehawk1120; 08-30-2006 at 05:49 PM.

06 PBM GTO(458WHP)SOLD!!- 06 TR GTO~476WHP 425TRQ
Not a guru but it would be kinda pricey for an upgrade. Its easy to do but you could prolly buy a PC with same memory etc for about the same maybe a little more. Round $600-$900

buy new ram, and if you can overclock the processor, overclock it and upgrade the cooling sytem....you could probly overclock that processor to a 2ghz if done carefully..... if it breaks, go buy a new PC.

just buy a new processor and memory..
make sure its not too much that your board cannot support it..
prolly $200 bucks.
I build pc's for $100 =)
you pay for all parts and software.

You can always pull the switch a roo like one of my friends did. He went to Wal-Mart bought an Emachine system that came with a monitor for like $600. When he got home he stripped his old comp and the brand new Emachine took the parts from his old comp stuck them in the new Emachine (formatted drive and all) and returned it.
When at Wal-mart the customer service rep asked him why he was returning it and he said " it doesnt work the way it's suppose to so im going to exchange it for another" The lady told him to go and get the same one and come back to the counter so she could do the exchange lol....So for $600 he basically got 1.0 gigs of DDR Ram (2) 160 gig HD's and 2 AMD Sempron processors. Cant beat that for $600.
Of course i told him he was stupid for even trying that and lucky he didnt get caught. But he didnt care. I do have to admit though it was a pretty good idead and lets face it Wal-Mart takes ANYTHING back.
