Chicago man fired for wearing Packers tie
http://sports.espn.go.com/chicago/nf...ory?id=6056888
The dealership was well within their right to do this. Remove the tie when asked to buddy. A business is not a democracy.

Pewter- 2002 Trans Am WS6 M6
He didn't listen to the boss and got fired for insubordination. Which the dealership had every right to. Hope the new dealership is happy with the prospect of him going straight to a news paper if he is fired for something he doesn't consider correct.

Especially being in the profession he's in. A car salesman. Dealerships change car salesmen like I do my underwear. There's absolutely nothing secure about it.

Yeah whether you personally agree with it or not, when you're in a customer facing business and your boss doesn't like how you're dressed, you adjust how you're dressed. And whether you agree with it or not, when he says 'change or you're fired' and you refuse to change, well you can't run to the newspapers crying 'I don't know why I was fired'...
Wait for it, there will be a lawsuit.

I have a different view.
The Manager needs a class on management and how to be a leader.
Is there any dress code in the employee handbook regarding the wear of holiday ties, sports ties, etc?
Do they allow other employees to wear similar ties like stated above? If they do, the GM has violated a big HR policy on this issue and he could be in trouble and cost the dealership money.
However, here is the overall big issue that as a GM he fails to realize and proves he has never taken a management class.
Is the offense that the employee committed worth the negative publicity that may come about and the lost sales that may occur? NO!
BTW, there are already people wanting to buy a car from the salesman at his new dealership.
Personally I would tell the salesman that he probably did not make the best decision and left it at that and maybe send him home for the day if there was no violation of HR or discriminatory policies. I agree regarding how your performance works. Working in this industry myself I can tell you that a top performer allows some of your minor shortcomings to go un-noticed.
The problem is he is a top performer and sold 14 cars last month, so he is not a poor performing salesman.
He was in the middle of a sale when it happened, so the tie offending people is moot.
He offered to cover up the tie.
He was cussed out on the sales floor
I am going to side with the salesman and stand that the GM needs a thorough class on how to be a leader in a car dealership.Last edited by 98Hardtop; 01-25-2011 at 04:52 PM.

My dealership has a strict dress code for the sale people and service advisors. But no one would ever get fired for wearing a Bears tie. Nobody does that. Sounds like the GM was a little hot-headed after the Bears loss.

Don't forget that the dealership has an advertisting/financial relationship with the Bears. That was the crux of it...
But I agree with the guy above that the manager didn't handle it well either. Both of them acted like hotheads. But in this case the manager hothead won.

In this case - there wasn't two instances. He lost, plain and simple. He didn't comply to the repeated (5) efforts to get him to stop wearing that tie. The company had a lot of money in advertisement, and also a deal with the Chicago Bears.
If that company had a good price - this wouldn't stop me from buying from them.

Manger being hot headed or not. This salesman doesn't own or run the company. You take the damn tie off when you're asked to and avoid the risk of losing your job. It's simply not worth-it.
