Is changing your oil every 3,000 overated ??

Is changing your oil every 3,000 miles just something to sell more oil/filters or is it really vital to the life of your engine ???

If this answers your question, it doesnt do harm. A general rule of thumb is when it gets a lil dirty to change it. Time effects oil because of all the contaminants that are in the oil and things like condensation which you definitely dont want, the break down of additives and viscosity. A good practice I believe is 3500 with a QUALITY dino oil and 5 to 7k with a good FULL synthetic.

my point exactly. this topic could go on forever. I view a cheap oil change as very cheap insurance to keep a very expensive engine running.

I have put 7,000 miles on my car in the 20 months I have owned it. The oil has been changed 6 times now. I would rather change it too often rather than the alternative.

I change mine around 4,500ish when using RP or mobil1 oil....3000 and 6000 both seem a little extreme to me.

How often should you change the oil in your engine? On most new vehicles, the factory recommended interval for changing the oil and filter is once a year or every 7,500 miles in passenger car and light truck gasoline engines. For diesel engines and turbocharged gasoline engines, the recommended interval is typically every 3,000 miles or six months.

If you read the fine print in your owners manual, however, you'll discover that the once a year, 7,500 mile oil change is for vehicles that are driven under "ideal" operating circumstances. What most of us think of as "normal" driving is actually "severe service" driving.

    Severe service driving includes:

Frequent short trips (less than 10 miles, especially during cold weather)

    Stop-and-go city traffic driving

Driving in dusty conditions (gravel roads, etc.)

Driving at sustained highway speeds during hot weather.

For severe service driving (which is what most of us do), the most common recommendation is to
change the oil every 3,000 miles or six months (which ever comes first

no one here is talking about "big oil".. no need to get into some bs debate that no one is going to win.

What you are basically saying is that "Big Dentist" has led us to believe that if we don't brush our teeth 2-3 times daily that our teeth will fall out, even though we have more refined toothpaste, and better tooth brushes nowadays.

It is called preventative maintenance... like i said before, cheap insurance
