Can't believe I'm saying this....
As a hard working autoshop worker I have weathered many storms. I have survived plant closings and temp layoffs and even a $3.00 paycut.
Now I have reached the point that I make more money recieving unemployment benefits then I do working.... Is their something not right about this? My only negatives are health insurance.
Now when I work 40hrs I average out a little ahead. I do pay childsupport so that's a pretty big negative as well but still.... I've lost all motivation and desire to go to work... lol Like seriously what's the point. I can make as much money sitting on my butt at home then I can working 10hrs a day on a 500 degree press.

Some of us knew that a good majority of hard working individuals would end up feeling these way. It's hard not to given the circumstances.
The door to a socialist nation has been opened and people are being forced to walk through it whether or not they realize it...

Well, its bad everywhere. Michigan Caterpillar just closed the Lansing store. I just found out. Permanant layoffs. Im laid off right now, going back next week to get maybe two more weeks of decent pay checks. Then, permanant layoff. I work at the Novi store, and it has been DEAD for months.

Yea that sucks....
I used to be scared of not having a job... Like people would look down upon me. In some ways they probally would but now what's the point. I'm sure I could find something under the table.
Only benefit is they sure as hell can't threaten my job anymore. I'll let them fire me in a heartbeat. Just get it over with. I could care less about that shithole.

I guess you could just stay at home. Let your child support build up, not pay for your child and become just one more drain on the economy. Not realistic to compare unemployment to your pay if child support isn't taken from unemployment..Let alone the fact that your collecting unemployment... I'd rather do ANYTHING..than collect welfare, but that's me. Let alone the fact that you're taking money from the system and there are people out there that have NO choice..Entire industries are shut down. GONE and they may not get a dime in help because theres thousands of people that feel the same way you do.. I heard that the other day at the lunch counter... I hear what you're saying.. but do you realize the fallout or repercussions such an action may have ? Gonna do what you're gonna do I guess.. And I can't judge ya, everyone has their own demons/cross to bear. I wish you the best tho, and more so to anywho have been laid off.

I understand your point.... CS comes out of my unemployment as well. My main frustration is I cannot see my daughter because of my new work schedule. I am on 2nd shift. Since I am the only one who can do my job properly they refuse to move me. Lots of less senority people on 1st shift yet they still refuse to move me.
At least on unemployment I would get to spend time with my kid and make as much money as I did before. Seems like a win win to me.

It's a sad situation to be sure. CA is right behind you on the unemployment rate and other states are falling in line very quickly...

i dont think politics plays any role..or if it does its not bad...this administration is the new scape goat...michigan has been in trouble for years...our entire economy in some way was closely tied into the auto industry ..we put all our fish in one barrel ..and now the barrel is dry..its not a republican's fault or a dems fault...it is everyone's fault that a bigger push for a diverse economy was not put on the table ...add to that a world economic recession and the few jobs not tied to the auto industry then suffer too.......but i am positive that things will eventually turn around..but we must have faith

Michigan may be in the #1 position at this time, and, I'm sure the reasons you give are legitimate. But, Michigan is not nearly alone in this downfall.
It must be nice to be positive that things will turn around. I guess that all depends on which direction you want things to go???
An even bigger government is not the direction I want to go

Yeah and I don't want my tax money going to someone who is perfectly able to work either. There is no reason we should pay your child support. I can't believe your saying this either but you seem like you're a real go getter. Looks like you will have all kinds of time to sit at home and rub one off while you watch knight rider DVD's that the tax payers probably bought you.

I'd just like to see the money go to schools and education so that we have teachers who are paid accordingly and that students have the proper tools to learn. And for crying out loud teach a class in high school about how finances work. The biggest one too would be to teach them about credit. Instead we graduate with no knowledge on it.

Eh, okay, so I get the point. It sucks that it's coming to a point where the unemployment checks and the ability to just be a drain actually sounds somewhat more enticing than going to work and beneficial on many levels. It seems like our dear big brother is there to help out, but when you start helping yourself, they cut you off.
It's no wonder there's so many "stuck" on welfare. There's no incentive to get off of welfare.
I was going to draw unemployment once. After all, I've been paying into it for years. The only thing I saw when I was looking through the requirements and what not is that it was just about as easy to just go get a job and work than it would be to take a pay cut to jump through hoops.
The government will not subsidize your income when you take a huge pay cut job just to be working, but they will pay a whole big chunk of your previous income to simply not work. That seems a bit messed up to me.

I believe a combination of the 2 got us into this mess. Government for passing certain bills being passed for tax brakes and bank deregulation. Private for taking advantage of those bills and other loopholes found.
As for fixing it'll prolly take a combination of both to get us back out of us this messLast edited by GTP231; 06-22-2009 at 10:32 AM.

I think it's about time to stop the blame game. There are many to blame. Democrats and Republicans... We are where we are and have to figure out how to fix things with the least damage in the long run.
However, I don't see how spending to get out of debt is the answer. Nor do I think bigger government is the answer either? The government f's up everything. Do we really want them in charge of everything?
Do I have all the answers? No. But, I know that what has not worked in the past will not work now. Not even for the good Ole USA...
