Can my kid tip over my 46" lcd? Wow sturdy?
I want to get a 46" Samsung LCD TV, but I have a 2 year old child living with me.
I don't want to wall mount it. So, will the basic stand that comes with it hold up to a kid who likes to turn the tv off and on???

It should hold up unless A: He is trying to knock it over, not just hit the buttons or B: He runs into it full blast.
Hell, even then a 2 year prolly wont be able to... those suckers are heavy enough to stay put, and the stands usally have a little give in them, so that usally helps. I think you'd be fine.

Will the swivel stand be better or worse???
I just don't want to see $2,000 broken on the floor.
Thanks

The kid will heal.
Are there bolt holes on the stand?

All plasmas Ive seen have really heavy bases and do have bolt holes. Just check the one you're buying before you pick it up. Id be more worried about scratches and holes in the screen. Thats more likely to happen with a 2 year old. Make sure it has the protective cover.

My 52" Samsung LCD will go over pretty easily. It would take some force, but I wouldn't want to take the chance. The bases do not have bolt holes.

They are make of plastic, but seem pretty sturdy I woul think if you drilled holes and used a big washer it would probably work okay. I would just put one screw in the back where you cant see it. It will be enough to hold it. The only reason you might have a problem is that the bases are rounded and not squared.

if it will stand close to the wall, you could attach a strap on the back of the tv and bolt the other end to the wall. tilt prevention ikea style.

I'd rig up a few brackets like that, so you're not drilling into the tv base, just the furniture the tv is sitting on.

Why are you against mounting to the wall? There's nothing to it.
We thought all of about 10 seconds about not mounting it on the wall.
But then we had visions (nightmares) of our rambunctious 21 month old getting smudgy fingerprints on the screen, trying to jam a sammich somewhere on it, or climbing up on the entertainment center and pushing it off/messing with it.
Edit: Also, go plasma, in particular go with a Panny or Pioneer. Hands down a better picture. Comparably priced LCDs have NOTHING on a plasma in terms of color, clarity, and response. And don't believe a word anyone says about image retention or burn in. Doesn't happen. I've used a xBox 360 on mine for litterally hours (4-6 hrs, sometimes longer) when the wife and kid aren't home and there's been absolutely zero burn in with static images. No ghosting. Vibrant colors, and the blackest blacks.Last edited by Tide; 09-06-2008 at 07:22 PM.

Good idea. As for plasma vs. LCD I prefer LCD. LCD's are thinner, lighter and last far longer than plasmas. Also in rooms with a lot of light plasmas glare more. My living room has a lot of natural light. The picture on my Samsung is terrific. The blacks on a blu-ray are black as shit and I never have any ghosting and mine is 60hz the 120's are even faster. As for burn in it's not going to happen playing a video game. Try pausing it for 2 hours and see what happens. Not that you would ever do that intentionally, but tell me a kid would never pause it and walk away and forget about it. I recently had my fiance's 15 year old sister stay with us for 2 weeks. A couple of times I got up to go to work and found my TV on the TV station off air test pattern where it had likely been sitting for a couple of hours after she fell asleep. No big deal. Wouldn't be the case if I had a plasma.Last edited by yellowv; 09-06-2008 at 08:09 PM.

I rent and I'm sure drilling into the wall is a big no no.
When I get my own place in a year, I'm going into the wall.
