I have a WASR-10 err, AK47 also. Its a great weapon. You gotta refinish the wood trim though. I did mine up with some nice red oak stain and clear coat. I have only shot it once though, out my window on New Years. hehehe. It had almost no recoil at all which surprised me. I won't do that again though(out the window).

Most of the AK's shoot 7.62x39. You can get saigas and all, which are built on an AK platform, in .308, .223, even 12 gauge. Assault rifle calibers are intermediate in power, they're only about 1/3rd the power of your dads hunting rifle. They were made this way to be able to have controllable full auto, cuz almost nobody can hold control over a .30-06 in full auto. If you want shot for shot power that blows stuff up, hunting rifle calibers are way more powerful than assault rifle calibers.
5.56 nato is fast and light, shoots farther and doesn't penetrate as well. 5.45 pretty much same deal. 7.62x39 penetrates well but doesnt have the range.
Pretty much any rifle can blow up cement blocks and brick walls up to a certain thickness. Or if you got the ammo you can keep shooting and chew your way through any thickness. Many handguns too. They're not that tough.

The ak is a good stirdy built rifle, fun to shoot very reliable, but only accurate for about 100 yrd.BTW is it chinese made? the true soviet made rifles are the best but harder to come by.......good luck like I said fun to shoot and amo realitively cheap
