Silver- At least its paid for.
Anyone who has an in ground pool please come in.
Just wanted to know how much does it cost to keep up an in ground pool? As in extra cost for the pump to run and chemicals. Is it easy to keep up? Thanks

I have friends that have and have had them and its expensive to own if you dont do the maintenance. Things must be done correctly. You can also go with salt water or chlorine. If i remember correctly the chlorine is more money. The rewards though of having an inground far surpass the negative parts. Your best bet is to have a thorough talk with the local pool and patio shop. Talk to someone that knows all the specifics. I know Im not the biggest help but Im stating the obvious in that its not cheap lol

You have a very nice pool. That is really nice. I am looking at a house right now and it has an in ground pool. That is why I wanted to know how much it will cost to run it and keep it up. The house has been empty for 265 days. It is in Ohio. So more then likely the pool has not be up and running for a year. Was not winterized this year. Will this be a problem? It has a liner too. Hopefully there are no holes in it. The pump and the filter look pretty old though.

The biggest problem was when the pool was unattended too for about 6 months when I went on my little global jaunt to see the world.
When I got back, black algea had formed. I was lucky only the filters needed to be replaced in the pump but the algea ate into the surface and had to have the pool resurfaced. Big time dollars their.
So after that I said to heck with it and hired a pool lady.

It all depends on the size and how clean you keep it or what kind of filtration system you have. Our pool costs us around a $200 in chemicals and we run it from May through Sep then we close it for the winter. If we had a heater I would keep it open year round.

The best thing that you could do is find a reputable pool service guy in your area that has been working on vinyl liner pools for a long time. Have him come to the house in question and you and him go over everything. Find out when was the last time the liner was replaced. A typical liner will last on average 10 years. Some more some less depending on how the pool was taken care of.
I've been working inground pools for 9 years along with my boss who has been in the business 32 years. We replace on average 35 liners a year. Typical cost of a 20x40 liner replacement is $4000.00.
Bump the motor/motors to make sure they turn over and are not locked up. If they turn over do they sound good or do you hear bearing noise. Bearing noise is not good. Typical motor replacement $400.00. Pump replacement $700.00
See what kind of filter it has. If cartridge filter, pull the cartridge and see what it looks like. If de filter pull the grids and look for holes in the grids. Typical grid replacement $350.00
You really need someone qualified and GOOD (Typically the guy that is going to replace that next liner) come out and inspect the pool just like you would have a home inspector come out and inspect the house
We get call's every year to inspect pools.

Thanks for eveyone's responses. Now I would be kinda scared of it. If the liner needs replaced. Thats a lot. The pump and the filter would be ok to replace. The agent said they could put a pool and pump waranty in the contract. Who know's. Before I would do anything I would be having a good pool guy come out and look at it.
That is a very nice pool Sassy Cassie.

The first thing you should consider looking into is your home owners insurance policy and see what that will cost. Some companys will not cover you with and inground pool, or theyll just bump up your premiums...

If you are looking at a pool that wasnt winterized in the north...forget it...
Mine takes about $300/year in chemicals..but I use bromine rather than chlorine...little more expensive. My DE filter just crapped out...I wont get another...going to switch to cartridge or sand.
Heating depends on weather temps at night mostly. I like a 90F pool...
I gve up trying to keep it warm in September here..added $200 to the gas bill.
One good heating in June and it usually stays good rest of the summer if its kept covered. Pools are not much work really...if you keep up on them.
