Anyone laid off?
Just wondering if any one is laid off yet or has cut hours do to the economic mess? Just heard the town over laid off 600 people at a place where they make car seats. Just curious what everyones situation is.

My company just laid off 1/3rd of the workers, I wasn't cut, but the rest of us survivors got a 10% pay cut.

I quit before they had the chance. They cut everyone to a max of 35 hrs per week (I was cut to 14 - and I was a supervisor), and abolished all pay increases/bonuses for the whole company this year. I knew it was coming, and I was going to have to leave soon regardless (newly enlisted ), so I got out on my own terms while I still could.

I am a Mechanic at an Airline. Back in December I took a 14% pay cut ($4.54 an hour), They took 40 hours of vacation a year, No more holiday pay, and no match for my 401k.
Then they laid off over 90 mechanics and they will bring them back only when there is a heavy check. (they sold 7 of our planes and messed up the heavy check schedule so there will be work for 3 months, then layoff for a month then work again). Really sucks for the guys with lower seniority than myself.
Thank god I have been working a second job since June of last year, I kinda saw what was in the future. Now I have to work another 15 hours a week to make up what I should be makeing. I now work 67 hours, 7 days a week. Real fun.Last edited by Jays00ss; 02-06-2009 at 02:54 PM.

I got hit on December 31st, 525+ people out of 4900 got the axe. And the company is doing well - just lopped off the highly paid people like everyone else.
At least they gave good severance packages...Last edited by Paul Huryk; 02-09-2009 at 01:05 PM.

When I first got hired on a few years ago you could walk in and work anytime. I got a few 60ish hour weeks under my belt. Now its like only 42 hours max if that. Been laid off a couple of times. Laid off 34 more at work today.

i work in the hydraulic cylinder repair industry and we do all of our work for companies in the pac. northwest (bc, washington, oregon) i would say %60-%70 percent of our customers have had major layoffs in the last 2 months, most of which are experienced tradespeople. This speaks wonders for the construction/mining and all related industries as they are the ones who own all the equpment that gets fixed. We just laid 4 guys off on monday, most likely for only a couple weeks but things are starting to get busier again and we'll hope it stays that way, seems to be pretty widespread dent in the industries.

If you are laid off, healthcare is an industry that is booming. I heard that geriatrics is going to be a very secure field since a lot of Americans are going to be over the age of 65 in the next few years. But healthcare in general is a good field. In California, the field is in high demand and expected to grow.
This economy has forced a lot of people into unemployment. Those of us still employed should count our blessings. I am thankful!"I am the executioner. When a crime is committed and the exalted state does not take vengeance nor move to punish, then comes time for the executioner to declare himself. I have waited long enough. The criminals are hereby sentenced to death. By fire. By earth. By water."
