Anyone here into Jetski, Waverunner, PWC stuff?

My newest obsession in life is my Waverunner. Its a old school '97 Yamaha GP1200. It has a 3 cylinder, triple carb, 2-stroke engine. Bought it last August, barely rode it like 3 times. It ran ok and was fun but I could only get 49 to 50mph GPS out of it. Its supposed to run about 55-57mph stock. So I tore it down and I'm rebuilding up with a few minor mods. Hoping to run 60 to 65 mph. Pretty slow by today's standards but fast enough for me.

This isn't mine but it looks like this:

And the engine torn down a little bit:

Dude july of 09 when I come home on leave from Iraq, me and my brother rented jet ski's at Holden beach and went out in the ocean. And holy shit is it fun, expcially at the beach where you have waves already, which you dont have to have a boat creating them like at the lake. Btw it sucks to get flung off of them at 65 colliding with wave's at the same time.

Had a Yamaha of a similar year, was alittle slower than yours, 40MPH tops.

Sold it for motorcycle, lead to much more fun. Easier to maintain as well.

yea yea yea, and I dont like wearing clothes if I could I would walk around naked everywhere, but at the least I can settle for a man thong at the beach, on a jet ski just gotta make sure I get my ass lathered up by one of the hot life guards so it doesnt get sun burnt

I think it was 94 or 96. It only cost me $1000 with an aluminum trailer. It was pretty slow and I'm pretty sure it was a 3 cylinder as well. Everyone could run circles around me.

I can't believe I can't remember what it was called.

I think the only MOD's I did to it was impeller and I don't remember what the part is called but it was some sort of scoop for the water intake. Besides usual plugs, wires etc.

Finding parts was a pain, but I did use the internets as much back then.

The only triples back then were the WaveVenture (3 seater) and the WaveRaider, I believe. And yes the jet intake grate is a popular upgrade. I'll be doing that to mine also

Here's mine... had it for almost a year before I blew it up. July 4th weekend of 2009, took it out onto the main area of Lake Anna, jumping wakes and the motor went loose

Those waveraiders are damn fun. I've ridden a 750 alot. It is very lightweight, and very tossable for a sit down. I have alot of fun on it. It indicated almost 60mph, so I figure it was still low 50s gps. Not bad for an older ski. I remember my uncle used to have a GP1200R, and it ran mid 60s indicated, so likely high 50s actual as you said Cutlass. It was a heavier ski though, not quite as nimble. I want to ride a seadoo rxp-x at some point.

Nice GP800!! When you say motor went loose, do you mean you broke the motor mounts or the motor just quite running? You gonna fix it?

Those GP1200R powervalve motors will run in the 60 mphs stock, easy 70s modded, 80s all out modded. Nice skis for top speed runs, but are a little heavy. Mine has the non-powervalve motor and is a bit lighter then the "R's"
