Anyone here have birds?

Wife thinks a bird would be fun. I bought a huge cage. Now, what should I put in it?

I had a Cockatiel for 11 years. They were fun, but a bird is a lot more maintenance than most other pets and not near as cuddly. Messier too.

Only get a bird if you've got lots of free time. They are fickle pets...they're fun and love you if you spend like an hr+ playing with them per day (including cleaning their cage at least every other day, feeding at least once per day, changing water several times per day - they poop in their dish a lot.), but if you ignore them, they'll hate you and start biting a lot. Most birds can bite blood and many can take off fingers.

That said, if you've got the time to devote to it, I like Cockatoos. They're big, easily trained, can talk, and very affectionate.

I've had my cockatiel Dickie for 22 years! He's had 3 partners over the years and has outlived them all! He is not hand raised but he whistles a mean Kookaracha (just the 1st verse) says hello and gives me the cat whistle. Make my day!
