Any backpackers or survivalists on here?
I've been getting my gear ready for a two week trek down the Applachian trail in September. So far I've spent some money but bought some quality gear since my plan is to live off the land for two weeks. Bought some new Black Diamond climbing gear, new harness, figure 8, D-rings, etc.. and a Infinity pack to store all this gear in. I figured this would be a good way to enjoy nature, relax and get away from my daily headaches for a while. I noticed it was illegal to carry firearms on National Park property but isn't there a permit you can get that allows you to? I'm carrying my pistol whether it's illegal or not, I'm not into bear and mountain lion encounters! Anyone been on the Applachian trail? I'm looking forward to this...

Since when is it illegal to carry? Where do you guys live? Unless you are carrying a concealed without a permit, I don't understand. I guess I've never seen the sign, and just never assumed that a national park would take away the right they gave me. seems hypocritical?

Most National trails/parks I have ever been to comply with the State law that they reside in.

I have a conceiled carry permit so I should be o.k. but I ain't risking my safety for some B.S. law like that. We had a family attacked by a Grizzly a month or two ago at the Cherokee national Park, the mother was badly injured and her daughter was killed. I've had a encounter with a mountain lion once before and I about shit all over myself, I'm thankful the damn thing went the other way or I'd been dinner. I'm going to look into it though just to be sure.

I definetly agree to look into it. Just because you have the permit to carry a concealed weapon in your state may not necessarily allow you to carry on federal property. Make sure you check and double check because the last thing you need/want is federal firearm charges.
Just found this:

Very true, I'm going to call and confirm. I still need to buy a few odd ball things before I leave but I'm trying to keep my pack load down. I'm going to buy one of those summit tents, the pop up two man type that roll up in a small compression sack and a small sleeping bag. So far my pack in only 1/2 full and I've got all my fishing gear and basic survival gear packed along with clothes, cookware, etc..
Going to see if any of that Army training stuck in my head.

Can I carry a gun?
ATC strongly discourages hikers from carrying firearms. In areas of the Trail corridor where hunting is legal, hikers may see hunters carrying firearms. On National Park Service lands outside national recreation areas, possession of firearms by private citizens is illegal. The prohibition applies on many other public lands as well. Where firearms are allowed, state laws on licenses, registration, and related matters govern.
Guess that answers my queston, thanks for the link. I need to see where exactly it's legal and illegal, sounds to me like the area hunting is permitted would be exempt from the rule. Maybe it only applies around the recreation area's, I'll call to confirm just to be 100% certain though. If I can't carry a gun then I'll pack a BFK and some pepper spray. Big damn hungry pissed off animals aren't my thing.

I'm taking some MRE's along but will be fishing and catching small game as well. I'll be putting some of that 13B training to test
Usually I go with my uncle and we catch fish for lunch and dinner and maybe trap a rabbit or something. This time I'll be alone so I'll see what I can do. I've got a water purifying kit with iodine tablets for stream water and a pot to boil water in. I'll take some pics of the trip.

I didn't even think about panty hose, that's handy for several things. So far this is what I've packed, I'll try to remember everything.
1.) Army issued Gortex and wet weather gear
2.) Two pairs of Timberland hiking boots
3.) Roll of 550 cord
4.) Medic first aid kit
5.) Two iodine bottles for water purification
6.) dental floss, handy for fishing lure, etc..
7.) Mag light with spare batteries
8.) Poncho w/ liner for shelter and sleeping blanket
9.) Cigarette lighter
10.) K-bar bowie, swiss army knife and Gerber multi-tool
11.) National park map and compass
12.) Magnesium block
13.) Basic fishing kit with lures, hooks, weights, etc.. I make my own pole out of wood so I don't have to carry so much.
14.) canteen with clean drinking water
15.) Orange military flagging cover
16.) Surefire tactical light - bright and handy
17.) handheld GPS and Ranger beads
18.) Static 150ft. rappelling rope w/ Blackdiomond harness and D-rings
19.) Extra socks, underwear and clothes
20.) five MRE's and compact multi-fuel stove
21.) 50ft. of standard nylon rope
22.) personal hygeine items and misc. stuff
That's about it other than the tent and sleeping bag, I know I'm forgetting something but that's enough to get out there and live for two weeks hopefully. I plan on trekking pretty far out beyond the trail, still need to find a target location near and creek or river but I'll figure that out when I get there.

Two things your missing that jumped right out at me:
Duct tape
Hot sauce
No way I'd take a two week trip through the woods without those items. Maybe the only other things I'd take is a small mirror and maybe some waterproof matches for when the lighter runs out of fluid.
Sounds like fun though!!!
