If you have an issue with a Raccoon getting into your trash cans, there are plenty of ways to keep him out. The simplest by placing a heavy sandbag weight on the lid. If he can't get in, he'll move on.

You could have just turned the can on it's side and it would have ran away.

I understand there is a level of danger to you but next time you have that problem call animal control first and let them deal with it. You could wind up on the wrong end of a citation and fine or worse.

If you've got to deal with it yourself and a .22 to the head is not an option, at least be more humane than your post indicates. Try this instead. Get a couple of blocks of dry ice and drop them in the dumpster. As the dry ice turns to vapor (carbon dioxide) it will displace the oxygen in the enclosed space and the animal will suffocate but it will be much more humane.
