Aluminum big block, where to find & how light?
Can anyone give me a lead on where to start looking for an economical aluminum block? Somewhere in the 427-455 cid range.
And what might the weight savings be over the same size block in cast iron?

You'll have to be more specific. Chevy? Other makes? BB? SB? Aftermarket?

always dirty- 2013 Ram 2014 Caddy ATS
Gm performance parts might still have some zl-1 blocks left. Otherwise Dart or World as Wheelie said.

I'm just poking around to see what I can find at the moment....I'm thinking about slapping a big block into an old beat up GM muscle car (of undetermined make/model), welding in a cage, and using it as a beater track car.
I'm not sure if I even want to go with aluminum at this point, but I thought it was something to look into, as less weight up front should equal better handling. I was hoping there might be a place that delt in used/refinished aluminum blocks for less than the big $ that go with a new one.
But this is all for a very long term project that I have just begun to think about....if only there was a way to put AWD / 4WD in such a car, it would be a lot more feasable for my budget, as it could then be used as my winter beater when the F-body goes in the garage, and save me the expense of running a truck/jeep as well.Last edited by Intrepidman; 03-11-2010 at 05:24 AM.
