Aluminum big block, where to find & how light?

Can anyone give me a lead on where to start looking for an economical aluminum block? Somewhere in the 427-455 cid range.

And what might the weight savings be over the same size block in cast iron?

    Sadly now demodded :(

You'll have to be more specific. Chevy? Other makes? BB? SB? Aftermarket?

Gm performance parts might still have some zl-1 blocks left. Otherwise Dart or World as Wheelie said.

I'm just poking around to see what I can find at the moment....I'm thinking about slapping a big block into an old beat up GM muscle car (of undetermined make/model), welding in a cage, and using it as a beater track car.

I'm not sure if I even want to go with aluminum at this point, but I thought it was something to look into, as less weight up front should equal better handling. I was hoping there might be a place that delt in used/refinished aluminum blocks for less than the big $ that go with a new one.

But this is all for a very long term project that I have just begun to think about....if only there was a way to put AWD / 4WD in such a car, it would be a lot more feasable for my budget, as it could then be used as my winter beater when the F-body goes in the garage, and save me the expense of running a truck/jeep as well.
