I don't use AOL, nor do I use AIM as my instant messenger program, but I do have a version of aim on my computer, and this is how I can change it.
(An easy way is at the bottom, if you don't need to use one thats on your computer)
AOL Instant messenger (AIM) Version 5.9.3861
-Click the "My AIM" menu below the top title bar
-Click the "Edit Options" Menu
-Click on "Edit Preferences"
-On the list to the left, choose "Expressions" (about 1/3 down the list)
-In the other side of the window to the right of the list, at the top you should see "My buddy icon" which shows you current buddy icon, and the a button to clear it ("Clear Icon") and to choose a different one from your computer ("Browse PC...")
However, it is easier to go to a website like http://www.badassbuddy.com/ where if you just click on any of their icons, it is automatically changed. You may need to choose what Instant messenger program to use, and the instant messenger program itself might ask for confirmation.
