Black- Murdered 2006 GMC Sierra
aaaaaaaargh
Timing chain took a crap on me today. Haven't driven the car in months then this. Guess she will be in the shop for awhile. Bright side is I can clean out the garage since she will be parked elsewhere for awhile.

i never thought about this, but will a breaking timing chain bust the valves in our cars?

Checked three different Sources for you. Alldata, Activant (Mitchell) and IATN.
No source mentioned the Gen III 5.7 litre as an "interferrence engine" which most likely means that there is sufficient PTV (piston to valve) clearance under a "failure condition of the timing components" to not cause damage to either the pistons or valve train... This of course will not take into account larger then stock internal components..
Hope this helps.

wow, thanks a lot! i know that older, low compression engines are usually allright, but wasn't so shure about the ls1. my engine is stock, so i should be good.
i haven't heard about breaking chains on the ls1 often, any way of telling if it's about to croak?

I don't think so, other than pulling the cover and inspecting the flex of the chain on the slack side ( one side is under tension and one is not )
I had 110k on my SS.. Beat the piss out of it. Altho I did do the chain etc when I did my cam at 60k ish. It was fine then. Chain is fairly easy to do tho. I only looked up 98-01 for the interferrence issue, but there shouldn't really be any significant design differences on the newer models in that regard.

Just got it towed in. The bad news is so far RPM has never had a car with just a timing chain faliure. I won't know until next week the exact extent of the damage.
