I've got a State Arms, bolt (shell-holder). Weighs forty-three pounds. 8-24 Burris Signature with target turrets.
Former owner shot competition in California (Bakersfield). I bought the whole set-up sans scope, but all dies, loader, etc.
He was capable of shooting 7" groups at 1000 yards with it. I haven't had a chance to shoot a thousand yards yet, but sighted in at 24" high @100 yards is dead-on at 1000 yards. I'm not a 100% on the load, but the projectile is 720+ grains at over 2700 fps. I sighted in at 150 yards and grouped less than .6 inch. and that was bipod only. Due to the weight and massive muzzle brake it doesn't "kick", but it does jump, and the muzzle blast is ferocious. I had a spotter, and after my first round I asked him to confirm the hit (it was high and left), and he said he didn't know. I asked him why (the spotting scope is 60x) and he said, look. I did and I saw that the muzzle blast had knocked the spotting scope over on the tripod!!! Stay at least eight feet away from that muzzle!!!
Some guys are shooting 20mm, but the good ole 30-06 on steroids for Ma Duece is still tough to beat for long range. Loads of fun to shoot, but expensive. Good ammo is $4.50 a round IF you buy in quantity. I can load for about half that.
Here's a pic below of the former owner with one of his other 50's. MIne is very similar except for the muzzle brake.Last edited by jad628; 09-27-2006 at 03:40 AM.

Ha ha. All kidding aside, you'll never have to worry about that. I'm pretty mellow. I just love shooting long-range, and a rifle that can hit a 30" circle at one MILE is just too tempting for me to pass up. The only things that need to fear me are paper targets and mean critters.

The problem with that is MOST .50 caliber projectiles are not designed to expand. Basically the frontal mass stays the same throughout penetration. The round was historically designed to damage equipment, not flesh, so the projectile is of a very solid, durable style. Military requirements dictate the use of these types of "Solid" or Full Metal Jacket for anti-personnel small-arms. It will still kill you just as dead, but the wound channel characteristics of expanding ammunition greatly increase the injury to flesh and bone at the cost of less penetration. On a soft skinned animal like a bear, a 50 BMG is likely to exit no matter what direction it enters. If it strikes a very thick, tough bone THEN the explosive nature of the impact would be realized. Basically, the bone "absorbs" a lot of the projectile's energy and becomes shrapnel, which is the reason for the violent separation of matter from the target.
Of course, H.E., armor piercing, tracer, and other specialty rounds are available in .50 BMG, but the vast majority of the ammunition is just a big ole FMJ round. The basic design of the .50 BMG was a 30-06, but on a much larger scale. .30 caliber ammo (although now most is 7.62 or .308 civilian nomenclature) is a mainstay in the U.S. arsenal and many NATO countries for good reason. It kills and wounds with great ease. The .50 is over-kill, and truthfully isn't "supposed" to be used as a personnel weapon for HUMANE reasons, but that pretty much went out the window!!! I've seen the results of human hits with .50 BMG, and it ranges from a half inch entry and exit - with a lot of tissue loss later on survivors, to actually blowing the body to pieces in the literal sense. A hit in the vitals is more than likely going to be lethal. A head shot is a given fatality and will almost always be explosive in nature.
But I just punch half-inch holes in paper.

Here's a "pulled" projectile from a military Lake City load. This is JUST the projectile (720-ish grain) compared to a .40 S&W Hydra-shok. Sorry, it's from my camera phone a minute ago.

I always wanted the M82A1, but the one time I had the 7300$ that it costs I bought a car instead. After seeing the Army's version (M107, XM107 at the time) do some serious damage in Iraq I fell in love. If you can afford it go for it, those things rule. Ammo is EXPENSIVE.
