5.5 Liter Corvette Motor Details
Hey guys, I meant to post this up a long time ago. I went to the 12 Hours of Sebring for the ALMS event and spent some time at the Chevy tents and Corvette Corral section.
This event was the unveiling of the new 5.5 Liter production based GT2 engine. This motor is made at the Wixom, MI plant next to the LS7, LS9, and Grand Sport Manual only (dry sump) LS3.
Looking at the casting numbers, etc. on the block it looks like a 7.0 liter block and they just shortened the stroke a bunch (from 4.00 to 3.185). The bore is only slightly smaller, probably a thicker cylinder wall for putting up with racing abuse (from 104.8mm to 103.9mm).
If what people are saying about this motor is true, that it is a test bed motor for the production engines going into the C7... Could this just be a rotating assembly swap away from 400+ cubes? Say, swap in an LS7 crank? Plus Direct Injection and VVT?
I also posted some pics of the Pratt and Miller C6RS I saw there.
This car is ridiculous... Something like an 8.2 liter Katech motor in it. Center lug wheels, etc. Look it up.
And of course the new for 2011, Z06 CARBON.
Features carbon fiber body panels of the ZR1, Magnetic Ride, ZR1 spec wheels, tires, and of course BRAKES!!! By the way, limited numbers of Carbon models will be built. But, the 2011 Z06 can be optioned with the Z07 package and get all the Carbon hardware!!!
