The forums are split up, /b/ is the link for the "Random" forum. Just like we have politics, aag, etc... /b/ is where it all goes down.

All the subforums on 4chan have one, two, or three letter identifiers which are used in the URL.

examples include:

v - video games
o - automobiles
g - technology
sp - sports
p - photography
fit - health & fitness
b - random

The slashes are used because that's how they appear in the URL, such as, for the video game subforum, the URL would include ".org/v/imgboard.html"

This is why the "Random" subforum is known as /b/.

Also, the Random board is where all the memes are spawned, and where all the shock/lulz/raid posts are made; generally referred to as the asshole of the internet.

Ignoring the 18+ year old sections of the site, the rest of 4chan is actually pretty normal and like many other forums, but the random board has grown so popular and notorious that when referring to things coming out of /b/, sometimes 4chan in general is mistaken (somewhat) as the source of the material, whereas in reality its only coming from a small subsection of the website.

-A text image reading "The official 4chan movie thread"
-Bill nye the science guy
-A screen capture of a media player showing two naked women performing sexual acts on one another
-A pair of breasts
-The cover artwork of the PlayStation video game "Metal Gear Solid"
-A nude girl talking on a cell phone
-Glenn Beck making an odd face
-A collage of Dragonball Z characters
-A text image requesting users to post something possibly racist
-An infant
-A cooked turkey reading a newspaper while defecating stuffing
-The movie poster for the Dragonball movie
-John Goodman, edited with a racist caption
