So I was watching Headline News, and apparently some girl got tasered at school. At first I though: "lol, noob security guard, child abuse lawsuit incoming."

But then some facts about the 11-year-old girl were shown on the screen:

Deputy Donna Hudepohl, Moss Park Elementary school resource officer, was forced to use her agency-issued Taser against the 5-foot-5, 170-pound girl after repeated efforts to hold her down failed, officials said.

170 POUNDS?? Not too long ago I weighed 170lbs. And for most of my teenage years, I weighed a lot less. My girlfriend is 5'5". Maybe I haven't been to the local elementary school lately, but I was under the impression that little kids were... you know, little...

I think the tasering was completely justified. If I were a security guard and I got punched in the face I'm sure as hell going to taser you, especially if you're some freak of nature monster thing compared to the other kids in your class.

Well, two things. First, it was a school resource officer, not a security guard; that's a POST-certified police officer. Secondly, it wouldn't fall under child abuse unless it was unjustified, since the officer has qualified immunity otherwise, so a lawsuit would simply get tossed out by the court. On the use of force scale, tasers are considered to be on the same level as pepper spray, which is before any hard-hand strikes or baton use, so she's good to go in terms of the law enforcement training guides used around the nation; her only concern would be departmental policy. However, since going hands-on with someone almost always results in some type of injury to both officer and perp, taser is often the better choice, if it's available. We tased two last night... nothing like a lightning ride to take the fight outta somebody.

Oh, and you're right.... that's a seriously-sized 11-year-old girl.
