$$$
aaarrrgghhhh.
three weeks ago my desk top pc died, got a virus that I couldn't cure,
New pc = $644.00 - it's a basic pc, not the biggest baddest - but it's nice
this week my clothes washer and dryer that I've had since 1993 have died. I know I've gotten my moneys worth out of 'em but dang. . . again went with basics
New appliances = $1004.00 delivering tomarrow
my new car fund is now $1,648.00 thinner than just a few weeks ago. . . .
I am hoping to save enough to purchase new car with cash, unless stuff keeps breaking around here.
I'm in this goal for the long haul.
I paid cash for both my motorcycles and my Z28.
Just takes time/patience and luck to not have catastrophes.Last edited by LimeNine; 01-22-2011 at 01:52 PM.

Appliances are pretty easy to work on and there's probably an appliance parts store near you. Just like with your car a little time and a couple how-to's could've saved you money.

If an appliance is more than a few years old, I'll never put money into fixing it.
I've done it twice and all I managed to do each time was postpone the death of the appliance for another year or so.
Just find your local scratch-and-dent Sears or HH Gregg outlet and get a new one for half price.
It'll have a dent or something but will work fine. And the dent is usually in a spot that can't be seen when it's installed at your home.

You know what... I'll keep my older appliances running as long as I can. They are built better then the new crap on the market today. I've got a kitchen full of crappy new, made in Mexico Kenmore's that have been nothing but a headache since I bought them a few years back. While my old Kenmore, made in the USA is still plugging away in the garage. Never an issue.
Same with my washer and dryer. Both over 20 years old and still going strong. I don't think anything you buy new these days will last 20 years.

Same here.. I have a deep freezer that is 30 years old.. Washer and dryer are 30 years old.. Current fridge is 20 years old..
You can not buy a dvd player that last more than a year or two. I hope the same does not happen to blue ray players. Heck they make very little that will last as long as the old stuff. We have become a consumer nation...

PC probably could have been reformatted and ran better than before. If you don't know how to, I'm sure a repair shop could have or you could have bought a legit copy of windows. $100 to $200.
I craigslisted my washer and dyer for $200. 2003 models I believe.
I've found many cheap routes for things around the house, patience is key.

Here's my take on it - by his old appliances going down the tubes, it'll probably save him money in the long run.
Especially the newer washers - when they spin, the get the clothes much much dryer than the old ones.........which equals A LOT more money saved when you put them in the dryer.
Efficiency and reliability don't always go hand in hand!
