I Know This Sounds Really Stupid, But...

I almost didn't ask this, but I'm curious. What would happen if you were to run a supercharger and a turbo (or two) on the same engine? Aside from being really hard to run all of the piping, I don't really see why it would be a big problem. I know the practicality wouldn't be very good, since you could always get a bigger blower/turbo, but it would be kinda cool.

ive asked b4. its too much to explain. there was a concept car last year that had a clutch on the super so after the turbo kicked in it would shut off but no woed of production(it was like a 1.5 liter engine

its called twin charging..there is a kit out for the mini coopers right now...its used to make an engine have a bigger powerband, but with a lt1/ls1...hat really isn't a problem.

Ive seen this setups. The reasoning is trying to get the best from both worlds, The SC provides instant forced induction power while the turbo provides an additional kick later in the powerband (due to turbo lag). You could also add a bit of juice in the mix! Tuning these steups is a bit complicated.

The Lancia S4 Group B Rally car back in the 80's used both.

it wont let my type a direct link. Copy and paste the latter section of text.

Supercharger isnt easy to spot, but it is mounted underneath the inlet manifold. You can definately hear it though !! Check out the videoclips.

Look at the RX7 twin turbo. It has a sequencial turbo setup that does this a quick spooling small turbo for low end and a larger one for mid and top end boost. The reason most people don't use this setup is because it is a hassle if it does not come that whay stock, same thing can be accomplished with a well though out single/twin turbo(nonsequencial) or supercharged application. There are disadvantages to having multiple compressors on one engine. First off, the head units are by no means cheap. There is a lot to be said for simple layouts........I would like to see a centrifugial supercharger that has continuisly variable gear ratios for better low end boost.
