If you set the PC setting to 1440 x 900, the monitor is displaying the optimum 1440 x 900 resolution.

What size/resolution monitor were you using before?
On a same-sized monitor, the higher the resolution, the smaller everything will appear.
Example:
I run my display at 1680x1050.
At that resolution, if I hold a ruler up to the screen, my start button is 5/16" tall, and my instant messenger window is 5.5" tall.
If I change it down to 800x600, the start button and instant messenger window are still displaying at the same amount of pixels each and are both unchanged, but using the ruler again, the start button is 5/8" tall and the IM window is 9.75" tall.
Hope that helped explain.

Yeah, it will look smaller.
You can run it at 1440x900 and still change the font size:
Right click your desktop, and click on properties. In the display window, click the Appearance tab. Near the bottom will be a drop down list titled "Font Size". The default is "Normal", but you have options for "Large Fonts" and "Extra Large Fonts."

No, the widescreen wouldn't have that effect, its just the resolution. I don't know how to change the size on this web site, but a trick that works on others is this: Go to www.google.com (for an example) and hold the Ctrl key, and scroll you mouse wheel. It should change the size of the fonts on the website.
