    3:73 gears

I currently have 2:73 gears in my car and was considering going w/ some 3:73 gears. I'm just wondering if it'd be worth the expense of the gears, install kit, oil and paying someone to install them. I was considering upgrading to a 12 bolt but I don't want to spend $2k + for a new rear right now when I don't need it. I plan on doing a stall soon also so I would just get them both adjusted for on the tune.

    well, the

    install kit is around $90

    gears are about $200

I would imagine about 2 hours of labor, so around $180-200

make sure! you get a 3.73 kit that fits the 2 series carrier!!!!!!!!!!!!

That's the thing tho, I'm dropping $500 for the new gears but a completely new rearend would only cost me $1500 more...lol. Just confused as to what to do.

Depends on how much you want to spend right now. A beefier rear-end would definitely pay off in the long run if you plan on doing some serious modifications. If you don't in the near future, there are probably other things you could spend that money on right now.

How important is the rearend gearing when combined w/ a stall? I was considering a 3800-4000 stall so I don't want to make sure they both work well together.

    3.73's and a 3800-stall will be a blast! That's what my cousin has in his '99 formy...AAM 3.73's and a Yank 3800 stall.

Does your cousin DD his car? Mine is a DD so I want to make sure it's somewhat streetable. My work is only a few miles away so I'm not going to freak out if when I lose a couple mpg's.

Naw, he's got a '93 LX he uses as his DD. As far as streetability, that's hard to say. Some guys have complained of too much slip from a stall that high, while others state it is perfect for DD. So yeah, it's hard to say for an LS1 car.

save your money for a STRANGE 12 bolt or the moser 9". I wasted $500 installing gears in my old 10 bolt. Luckily I got the $ back out of it when I sold it.

But I see guys running 11's and sometimes 10's on the 10bolt. I rarely if ever race mine so it's not going to be on slicks. I want to upgrade the rear when I'm making serious power and am taking it to the track....I'm hoping that I'll be ok on the street and on street tires.

Ask those guys running those times how much $ and how often they have changed componets. I bet 75% of those running those times could have bought a 9" by now.

Your money, 10 bolt is a pyle of shit. A 7.5" ring gear is just asking for trouble. Adding steeper gears puts that much more stress on it. I have seen stock M-6 cars blow out the rear on the street. Pay now or pay later I guess.

Kind of Ironic they put the biggest piece of shit rear end gm ever made into one of the highest hp small blocks ever produced. Can someone say DUHHHHHH
