Security light stays on, but car runs fine???

just purchased a 99 T/A and the security light stays on all the time but the car starts and runs fine? The previous owner says its been on since he got the car about a year ago. Anyone have any advice to start trouble shooting and fixing this thing. I imagine something is screwy with the VATS.

    Thanks

bank 1 or 2 ? what are you talking about

Right out of my transam repair manual:

If security light stays on there was a malfunction in the vats system and it stays on till it is repaired.

So basicaly, you either got a vats key issue, vats ignition cylinder problem, or vats bcm issue.

if you want to fix it, disconnect your battery for a few mins, and then put it back in (10 mins?) and the light will be gone, but if your vats does malfunction (aka your key is bad, or your cylinder) then your going to have to fix it correctly. Or use the vats resister bypass.

    Goodluck!

Yeah, thats what I figured but I did not get an owners maual. That's a ton. I had reviewed the VATS bypass and plan on doing it soon.

    Thanks guys!!!
Actually, the alarm still seems to work too, since I set it off the other morning. I opened the door with the key but a few seconds later the alarm went off. I guess I did not get the ket in the ignition fast enough.
Every morning all the stupid and incompetent people I know get together and think of ways to make my life more difficult!

If you haven't bought a hand held scanner which I suggest for reasons just like this. Anyway if you don't have one just yet go to your local Advanced Auto or Auto Zone and ask them to scan it for you. They can scan just not delete any codes. Write the code down and look it up or post it and we'll hook you up from there.

the security light won't set a code. Your vats is about to bite the bullet. Check the stickies out and there's a thread in there that tells you how to bypass it and save yourself a few hundred dollars.
