Make sure you get one that can do shielded gas welding. Don't get one that only does flux core welding. Flux core welding spatters too much and comes out generally crappy. If your budget is $1,000, make sure you have some cash left in your budget to buy a bottle of argon/co2 mix and a regulator (if your welder doesn't come with one) at your local welding shop. I bought a harbor freight tools 220V model that can use the shielding gas. I paid about $250 for the welder, $40 for the regulator, and about $100 for a bottle with argon/co2 mix. It welds okay, but then I got a good quality 275 Amp Lincoln Welder and all of a sudden, my welds look great and it was easier and faster to use. The problem I noticed with the cheaper welders is that the motors operate kind of abruptly, so there is more jamming up of the electrode wire. Ebay has Millers and probably Lincolns for about $700 that come with the regulator, wire, gun, and even an operation video. That should leave you with enough money to buy the bottle of argon/co2 from your local welding shop and take your dad (not your boyfriend) out to dinner. Best of luck!

dont bother with a mix gas just use argon. its more redily avalible and unless your dealing with some exotic meterials its not goin to make a diffrence.
