Which Sensor is this? (Rat chewed through wire)

Long time no post!

The car's a '98 TA. About a year ago, a rat built a nest under my hood and fortunately, the only obvious damage was this partially chewed wire and some stripping of the hood insulation.

So, which sensor is this? It's not chewed through completely, but I'm gonna need to replace it:

I figure most of you can tell where on the engine this is, but for orientation purposes, here's a wider shot:

Looks like the fuel injector

yes, that would be a the wiring for a fuel injector.

So what do I need to do to fix it? Is it just a matter of a new plug, or is it more involved than that?

I'd get a new plug and wire it to the harness, hopefully the replacement will have a few inches of wire. Just me, but I'd solder the wires together and use some shrink wrap.

Heheh...not having any experience with this, I did a quick search for "LS1 fuel injector wiring harness". Imagine my surprise when I saw it was ~$700+. I obviously don't need the whole harness---just the plug with some wire.

Any idea where I can find it?

Give the dealer a call and see what they say, if they tell you that you have to get the entire harness (surely not) look for a donor car. If only the insulation was chewed maybe you can separate the wires and try to repair what's there? Hard to tell from the pic.

Looking at it, I would say find a doner car with fuel injection, I would imagin that GM would use the same connector with most vehicles and take that harness. I'm a big fan of tracing wires back to see if the join into another plug and taking the wires from there, Copnnections and all. Or cut back generous amount and the soldering and heat shrinking the splice.

Some of the wires are frayed, and the damage is about 1/4" from where it enters the plug. I doubt that's enough room to just cut and splice (salvaging my existing plug). I assume it's working, however. Forgive the ignorance, but what "symptom" should I expect if the injector is not working?

If it is working in its current condition, is cleaning up, soldering, and shrink-wrapping what's there a viable option? At least until I can find a doner car?

Wow, guess the critter wanted to sharpen it's teeth too! Not sure which wires do what but from that pic I'd imagine it's probably not firing, shutting down that injector and causing a misfire code. Won't hurt to try a repair I guess, then start the car and see if the SES illuminates/starts flashing.

It's been in that state for over a year, and I've not received any SES lights.

I would suggest, if you want a temp fix till you can find a donor. Dissconectting the wires for that injector and pulling enough out of the loom to be able to wrap a quality, self vulcanising e-tape around it. 3-m makes some of the best stuff.

Make sure both wires are seperated to stop from creating a dead short when you wrap.
