My DD got her first kill!
So here I am in my new daily driver, 05 GTO PBM M6 stock as can be (well bigger tires in the rear), heading to town to grab something to eat. I happen to spot a 97 GT riding my tail. I see in the rear view that it's an acquaintance of mine in a car I've never seen before. Raced him before in a different car with my Z and ironically it was my first kill in it as well. Anyway we get to the highway and I ease into the far lane. Sure enough he eases beside me and nails it. I knew it was comming so I was still in first (15 mph roll basically) and hit it as well. Immediately put about 2 on him. Then like a bonehead I was watching him in the rear view and hit the revlimiter before going into second. Then proceeded to put at least another 1- 1/2 on him I went to shift into 3rd and missed third! He still didnt gain and by the time I put it into 4th I had at least 10 on him at 100. Not really much to brag about beating up on a 4.6 with nothing more than a catback dumped and an automatic but given this is the first time I have ever raced with a stick and I'm used to hearing my exhaust over anything and was paying attention more to him than anything else I got a kick out of dusting a stang even though I drove like a newb (mostly true with a six speed).

The '96-'98 2-valve 4.6 5-speeds typically only laid down 170-180 hp or so..... generally less hp and torque than the 5.0s over which they were supposedly an improvement. The automatics, well....too embarassing to even mention. In the late '90s, I knew two guys, one with a '96 GT, the other with a later '90s RS V-6 Camaro. The Camaro had only an exhaust, and he owned the GT. I personally saw '96-'98 GTs with bolt-ons and superchargers post lower dyno numbers than bone stock LS1s.

Now a 1999 4.6 265hp would put down around 210-220 rwhp and run mid to low 14s. And yes the 1996-98 4.6 was slower than the 5.0. Nothing a LS1 has to worry about.

But you'd have to make so many mods just to bring a '96-'98 2-valve into a STOCK LS1's hp and torque ballpark, especially naturally aspirated, in my view, it would be a huge waste of money. If I wanted to build a '96-'98 Stang, I wouldn't even consider the 2-valve. Why not just go with the Cobra? The '96-'99 Cobras are slower than the LS1s in stock form, but if you were to take the money it would require to bring the older 2-valve up to LS1 performance levels, and, instead, spend it on the 4-valve.....you would have a MUCH faster car.

Yeah but even 99 cobras are still over 20k for a good one with low miles, you can get a 99 GT with 30k on it for like 8grand around here.

Really? That's insane!!! It's not hard to pick up a real nice, low-mileage '96-'99 Cobra around here for 10-15 grand....depending on the year. In fact, less than two weeks ago, a friend of mine bought an '03 Termi at a local Chevrolet dealership. The car is sweet, with under 30,000 miles, and he paid only $21,999.00. A pretty nice C5 can be had around here for less than 20 grand. If someone tried to sell a '99 Cobra in my area for over $20,000, it would probably be wearing antique plates before it moved!
