Automatic Shift Pattern
Whats with the shift pattern in all of the new cars with automatic transmissions? The ones where they like zigzag left and right between Park and Reverse and Neutral and Drive instead of just sliding straight back to go to the desired gear. I just had to rent a 300c with a shifter like this, and I hated it. I couldn't go between the gears without actaully looking down at the shift pattern.

Haha, I also tried out the auto stick. Its pretty much the gayest thing ever. Every time you hit the shifter, it takes like 2 seconds to actually shift. About the only thing its good for I guess is just to lock it in a lower gear or higher gear.

theres actually a very good point to it.... in the old ones where you just slide back and forth its very easy to accidentally miss the selection your trying to make... with the new ones they look cool, feel cool, and lock you into the selection you are trying to make, and once your used to it its no problem..

Here is a link so you can see what the Lighting Rods look like.
It was like a Lenco as you would just keep pulling a different lever for the next gear when manual shifting.

I saw one of those once and I tried searching everywhere for it and couldn't find it. How do they work? I see they are used for an automatic transmission, but what is the purpose of the other 2 levers? The one I saw had a red tag thing on the additional 2 levers that said something like Don't move these levers until you have read the owner's manual.

Wow, I just found this site when I searched for "his and hers shifter".

Thats pretty sick. So you can basically choose to leave it in high gear all the time and let the transmission shift automatically or you can use the lever to shift it manually, right???

Basically it's normal shifter all the way to the left......P,R,N,O/D,D
If you wanted to shift it manually you would pull the far left lever and pull it and that would put it in manual LOW or first. Then grab the middle lever and pull it and it would shift to second. Then pull the third into drive all the way back and it was in drive.
Exactly. Those Hurst cars were real cool. Not the fastest but cool cars to drive and mod with big bottle.

That would be the His and Hers, eh? I also had another shifter for an AT out of an early 70s Pontiac, if you were in manual 1st, all you had to do was bump it hard to the right and up, it would only move one gear, not all the way into Neutral.
Had the His and Hers in my .030 428 '67 GTO. Top speed was 118 MPH, 5700 RPM, no overdrive! Got there fast as hell too.

You would be referring to a ratcheting shifter. Yes they are widely available...
I like the "bump" name thats a first for me......
