Motor Trend did a comparison test on cop cars. They aren't the drag cars that people like to percieve them to be.

If I remember correctly the Hemi equipped Charger ran a 14.7 at best, and the Crown Vic ran a 16 something. Not all that fast. About enough to catch a stock 350 equipped third gen

14.7 that's awful close to a 14.5.

lol one time i was at irwindale speedway out here in so cal, its a 1/8 mile track anyways one of the officers ran his bike on the track and got like a mid 10, which i thought was hillarious cause you would think the bikes would be faster than most cars, but i guess not,

but anyways besides them havin chargers as cop cars, all i wanna know is why the 20 inch chrome wheels, that just seems stupid. they should put dub emblems on the side of those stupid cars lol

Yes, someone ran a 14.5 in an automatic LT1. That doesn't mean all LT1's run that slow. Its one example of a poor driver or a car in less than optimal condition.

Not to mention I don't even drive an LT1. Give it a rest, you're going nuts over this.

Also keep in mind, that most police packages aren't geared for acceleration, they're geared for mileage and top end. A police department is, after all, when it comes to their vehicles, just another fleet operator, with fuel to pay for.
As for the 20" inch wheels, within limits, the big wheel/ultra low profile tire combination actually helps cornering and stability by eliminating sidewall flex, a fact that road racers and manufacturers like Porsche have known and taken advantage of for years.

im not saying that 20 in wheels wouldnt help with top speed mileage or cornering ability, i just dont think they are necessary on a cop car. have you ever paid attention to a cop cars paint after like 2 years, can you imagine chrome wheels, dude these guys go drivin in the dirt,over center medians lol, i just think it was a bad move.
plus thats my tax dollars getting used to feed the competition lol and stupid dubs!

In our case, part of our quarterly inspection/evaluation is based on how we maintain our cars; it's also a matter of pride. As for crossing medians, etc, the overall tire diameter is unaffected, although the wide tire might not be optimal for wet weather, but who really NEEDS cornering ability more? Although I do think, as you point out (excellent point, btw!), that the public perception of money unnecessarily spent might point to a less ostentatious painted steel wheel/tire combination of the same size.

EDIT: A black steel wheel with a set of deep dish aluminum trim rings and a small chrome hub spider in the center can look every bit as aggressive, and a lot more businesslike.

the part about crossing medians all im saying is a 40 series side wall will due better upon impact than a 30 series, etc. but agreed no nuff said about the vehicles,

no obviosly you are a cop, do you ever look at the street racing forum or for example your best get away story? what do you think? im curious/

Some of the getaway stories are actually pretty funny, and unlike some officers I've seen, I can actually remember a time in my life when I didn't wear a badge, and that there will be a time someday in the future when I don't wear one, unless I get my silly self killed doing this job. I can remember when I used to drive a very lightweight 600 hp street machine, and I was on a first name basis with the cops who pulled me over regularly. I never gave 'em crap, laughed when they caught me, and wished 'em a good day, and after a few times, I got a rep with them as an okay guy who didn't street race, and just liked playing with his throttle from time to time, and they started letting me slide sometimes.

There are some things I don't find funny, like a certain member recently who decided to street race someone, and then was dumb enough to pull a badge on them. That's called an abuse of power, and it's one of the most insidious things about this job to a person's personality; people sometimes change doing this job, and the change isn't usually for the better. It's one of the best ways I can think of to wind up either fired or in jail.

Street racing? I've read some of the stories, and wonder how many of the authors will be here next year. I've pulled one too many kids out of a car that crossed the centerline, and the one that really got to me, was also the one who died while I was trying to comfort him. He was trapped in the car, and kept saying, "Please don't cry, Mama, I'm so sorry..."
I got broke of street racing (yes, I did it too, once upon a time) in a friends Firebird; it was about 2:30 in the morning on Archer Av in Chicago, nobody out (we thought) except us and this 'Stang...so we decide to get it on. My friend was driving, and we're doing about 80, and leaving the Rustang, when a station wagon pulls out from a side street. We had no choice other than to bounce across the concrete median, leaving sparks and almost going airborne, into the oncoming lanes (where in the HELL all that traffic came from I'll never know) dodging cars going in the opposite direction, and finally encountered two approaching abreast, bounced back across the median, up on two wheels briefly, and slammed back down on all four. My friend was white as a sheet, and I seem to recall taking a brick out of the seat of my pants. It woke me up to how wrong things can go in a hurry.

great storys' i personally am struggling with not street race, even thou i know how dangerous it is, i try really hard not too, but i dont know if you read my post on my story of outrunning the police, back in my stupid days which actually is not to long ago, i had a bike and i used to get into some trouble doing stupid things like wheelies etc. i quit riding as soon as i lost my best friend to a bike accident. its just stupid and unfair to loved ones to ride a bike the way i used too, and i dont trust myself on one so i just quit all together. but anyways i outran the cops several times in attempt not to go to jail for what i was doing, but i learned my lesson thru a friend.

thanks for your storys, it has helped me realize how stupid just one street race is.

Yeah, we were so very lucky we didn't kill anyone that night, including us. And this was before airbags.

You know yourself better than I do, make your own decision on it, but instead of giving up on riding altogether, you might want to consider changing the style of bike you ride, and switch to cruisers. There are plenty of cruisers out there that will still give you the fast, smooth feel of a sportbike, (the Honda Magna comes to mind; I own one) but by their very construction tend to discourage wheelies, etc---they just aren't built for it. That ain't sayin' my Magna can't pull the front end up---I was sitting at a stoplight, and my back tire was on a greasy spot. Light changed, I gave it gas, released the clutch, and nothing happened---for about half a second. Holy howlin' Hannah! Wheelies are only fun if you're expectin' 'em...

Of course, I realize you'd probably have to change riding buddies...but I can't remember when I was into road racing/sportbikes as many women pulling up their tops to show you their goodies, either, lol...

Sorry, got distracted, didn't mean to get off topic.
I think Chrysler has wide steel wheels available thru Direct Connection, along with a lot of other performance goodies, and I saw another police department somewhere around Catoosa County who had Mercury Marauders (makes a sharp looking police car!).
