What does Z28 Stand for

We all know what SS stands for, but what does Z28 stand for?

Way back when when they came out with the camaro.... the Z28 came from the RPO code in the vin# of the car.....i think

LS1 is the RPO code for the engine.

WS6 is the performance and handling package RPO code(or something similar)

ZO6 is another RPO code for the ZO6 package.

So that mean the Silverado Z71 package has 7 Doors and 1 cylinder? Or the Avalanche Z66 Package has 6 Doors and 6 Cylinders?

it's just the rpo code...I guess gm thought it sounded cool so they used it. Same thing with the ls1 motor...just an rpo code.

it was the option code for a beefed up camaro. thats all it stands for, nothing else

It was the next code after Z27 on the RPO list. In 1967 GM wanted to produce just enough Camaros for racing in the Trans Am series, they develope a car for it but couldn't come up with a name for it. The RPO assigned to this package was Z28, so they called it that since it was a catchy phrase. In 1968 it became a seperate model for Camaros.

Z28 has NOTHING to do with doors or cylinders. Nothing.

The Z28 code was the RPO code they used when the 67 Camaro was to be ordered with an engine that met the specs of the SCCA Racing. that engine had to have less then 305 Cubic Inches.
So Chevy took a 327 block, installed a 289 crank, and got a 302. This was used for both the 67 and 68 years. In 69, they had the TRUE 302 (DZ302) that they used.

The Z28 moniker was not planned on being displayed, until the huge success of the orders. So, in 68, they started calling the cars with that RPO a Z28.

Also, besides the engine, suspension and a few other items where cnaged as well.

Z28 was such a popular name, that it stuck to the end of the Camaro.

Z06 was a performance package for the Corvette back in 1963. It was a Coupe, big tank, big brake, and a 375 horse Fuel Injection motor. They only made 199 of them. Late on, they changed it so you could have it with a convertible, but couldn't get knockoff wheels, or the 36 gallon fuel tank.

Good job...some additions to what you said...

There was a displacement of 305 c.i. in the Trans Am Series and Chevrolet didn't have anything close to it. After playing with several configurations they decided to create a new engine. With that they mated mated the 4 inch bore block of the 327 with the 3 inch stroke crank of the 283. This brought the engine to just about the limit with something like a 302.5 cubic inch engine.

In terms of the name Z28, they were at a lost for a designation. The closest they came up with was a 302 special performance package. However, Chevy already assigned an RPO to what they called the Special Performance Package. The RPO Z27 had been assigned to the SS (but it didn't appear under that until '69). So this new option for the 302 was assigned the next number...Z28.
