    Service Engine Soon Codes

Recently, my 98 ws6 started showing the check engine soon light. I had the codes read at the local store and they are p0442 Evap Emission Control System Leak (small). and p1415 Manufacturer Control Auxiliary Emission Controls. I do not know where to start to look for these leaks. Any suggestions? Thanks.

I have already tightened the cap and i am on my second tank of gas now. The car runs fine, but the light still appears. I did not reset the computer, would you suggest i do that first?

P1415 is probably just a clogged drivers side air check valve, cheap and easy to replace yourself. I had P1416 for the passenger side valve. Usually a gas cap will throw P0440, but check the gasket and make sure it's tight anyway. Friend of mine had P0442 and had to have a shop pressurize the EVAP system with smoke to find his, hopefully you won't have to do that.

When they ran the smoke test, what wound up being the problem? Was it still emissions related? Also, i will replace the drivers side air check valve. I am not sure exactly what the part is, can you explain it to me? I appreciate your help.

The air check valve is the black, disc shaped valve between the metal air pipe coming of the header above the #5 coil pack, then connects with a clamp to the air hose on the back side. Just remove the clamp/hose, then use two wrenches to unscrew it from the pipe - one to keep the pipe steady and the other to unscrew it. PN on mine was 12565503, but doublecheck cause sometimes '98's are different.

Can't tell you exactly where his leak was, but it was back near the gas tank - and a little expoy sealed it. Also, he had his fuel pump replaced a few months earlier so that might have had something to do with it. Might not be the same problem on your car.

I'd replace the air check valve, clear the codes - then see if P0442 returns.

    P0442

I have the P0442 code as well, and my gas cap seal is kinda of worn with cracks. Did replaceing the cap do it for you and did you reset the computer?

I never did fix the problem. I am finally going to go to the dealer this week and get a new cap. I figure at 12 years old, the car is due for a new cap anyway. I will let you know if it works.

I bought a replacement cap at AutoZone and the Service Engine Soon light went out about a week later.
