Drive Shaft
HELP!!!!!!
One of my center caps came off of my drive shaft, I was in 6th gear doing about 70mph and all of a sudden there was a loud thumping noise and felt like I was driving over small speed pumps so I pulled over immediately. I checked everything out and all looked good so I started her back up. All was fine thru 1st,2nd but half way through 3rd bam same thing. Had car towed to shop and went to back car off wood ramps and as soon as I started back felt a thud, it was then that the shaft dropped out the rear. I have the safety brace that holds it up. I replaced the aluminum shaft with a steel one. We put it in and I took it for a spin. I have a thud thud thud along with a vibration as soon as I start going in 5th gear and it carys thru into 6th gear but in 6th it's not as much as a thud as it is a vibration. We took the shaft back to the maker had it checked out and put back in, no change at alllllll.
Any Thoughts?99 T/A WS6 LSX Pewter "BAD ASS" way to many things to try to list on here!

How does it look when it sits in the yoke? Any play on the yoke itself? Your pinon bearing could be shot which will give one hell of a vibration.
Was the "new" drive shaft check for straight and or balanced?
New u joint?

Did it hit the torque arm? Check to make sure the torque arm is tighten at the transmission. It's easy to over look and it will make noise when you let off or as the drive line and the suspension shifts.
Have you checked to see how close it is to the safety loop?

I don't have the means or the knowledge to do this I rely on my shop which lately has not been that reliable. I found this blog when I googled "vibration in 5th and 6th gear" but is it even possible to hurt the trans or even the rear when this happens to the drive shaft. I mean I guess there are several possibilities.

That very well might be the cause of the vibration. And yes the drive shaft can send enough force into the transmission to break it.
It might be time to look into getting the transmission rebuilt.
When I went to have mine dyno tune last yr after I got my 403 in, my 4th gear locking ring broke on the dyno. I had to kick the shifter to get it out of 4th so I could get it off the dyno.

Now that I think of it it may be what I'm feeling with mine in 5th/6th gear.

I personally wouldn't be rebuilding a transmission on a whim....
Sent from my SM-G900V using TapatalkBoost gets you laid, unless your name is Jon.
