Why did I fry my power supply?

So one of my 1000 watt bronze series power supplys shorted out yesterday. I was running pretty close to 1000 watts through it, I would guess 800-900, and it started to smoked then tripped the breaker and was directly shorting the circuit. Thankfully nothing else was damaged, I have heard of cases of entire motherboards etc getting fried from that. The shitty thing was I was running the same exact setup on my 650watt with one less video card. The only thing I changed was adding another 7950 sapphire and changed the power supply to the 1000 watt as far as hardware goes.

I thought that power supplies were supposed to shutdown if there are too many watts?
Do you think a 1000 watt gold series would work or doesn't that matter? I really do not want to pay 400 bucks for 1300-1500 watt.

Check the wires out of the PS to see if any of them were nicked during the install and grounded to the case. If you're not going to get a warranty replacement, crack the housing and look for a popped cap, bad solder...etc.

1000W is more than enough for cross fired 7950's, quad+ core, multiple drives.

    What was the make/model PS?

The PS was a coolmax 1000watt 80plus bronze series. It is a cheaper company but for 100 bucks I thought I would give it a shot. Not sure on the model, I would have to look when I get to the shop. I am going to try and claim the warranty but I cannot wait for that process to complete. So I am wanting to buy another now. I have had good results with cooler master. What do you think about one of those in 1000w?

I have been running an Antec 1000 watt for a while now with no issues.

I've had several cases from CM and always have been satisfied. I generally stick to Corsair/SeaSonic PS's which are priced a bit higher than what you've got. The HX850 from Corsair is my goto PS for a gaming system. Currently running Xeon 1230v2, 16GB's RAM, SLI'd nVidia 660's, 2 SSD's, 3 spinner HD's and a bluray for a gamer/video processing box. The Corsair is 4 years old and on it's 3rd system. Still under warranty.

I can get the CM 1000watt Gold series for 180 local with their 5 year warranty. I think that is what I will do, those corsairs are 300+. Hopefully after I get the coolmax back I will have two 1000w, a 650w.(Although I will not trust the coolmax with anything close to that 1000w) I will be running all 3 and combine that with the new fishtank lights and the power bill will beeeeeeee outrageous. The cops are going to come again. Haha

I've always used Antec on my lower end builds and either Corsair or Silverstone for high-end high power builds. I can say that you can't go wrong with all three brands. There are lots of other great choices out there though.

Apparently the 100 dollar coolmax is not one of them HAHA. I bought the cooler master and have had it running non stop for the past 2 and a half days without issue. Thanks for the input guys

I'm running a Corsair PSU on my system and I've never had a problem with it.

The cooler master has been doing good so far. Just like my 650w cooler master. I guess I just need to remember to stay away from coolmax.
