    True that man!!!

Last year my mom's suburban had a humming noise on it, turned out that the diff. had a couplbe of pinion gears broken in it. the total cost to fix it was 5,000, however she still had waranty... so this happened dec 1 2006 that didnt get fixed till dec 22 2006, but the warranty company was trying to blame fault on her, so a couple of guys from the company came and took pictrues and all that nonsence. bottom line its a headache better be safe than sorry.

Zboner, question? to have the 10 bolt narrowed, what does this mean?
I have a 8.5" 10 bolt 3.73 gears in my 04 5.3 Chevy short bed P/U. I want to go with 4.10 ring and pinion instead to get better eight of mile performance.

Spending $3k on any rear end is retarded. You can buy 10-bolts from junk yards for under $100 and bolt a 'new' one in.

When the rearend blows, there is a good chance it will take your tranny with it. I have seen it happen many times. My best friend had his stock 10 bolt blow at the track, it took his built 4l60E and 4000 stall with it. Very costly disaster for my friend. I would get tired of swapping 10 bolts after 1 or 2 times myself. I will gladly buy a real rearend instead of sticking junk 10 bolts back under my Camaro.

I'm not advocating bolting in another 10-bolt...but spending $100 for a junk yard one is a lot smarter than spending $3k to rebuild your stock 10-bolt back to stock.

What if I buy a diff cover for the 10 bolt for now , will that help the rear untill I can afford a 12 bolt ?

The covers help some, but you can still easily grenade a 10 bolt even with the cover.

What cover do you recommend? I'm in the same situation; don't have the extra $$$$ yet to get a 12 or a 9, so I'd like to at least strengthen the stock 10 as much as possible until I can swap it out....

The cover will help keep the pieces in better too once it blows. I've had a bolt off a ring gear puncture a rear cover already. That was a GM 12 bolt with a chrome cover though. That was also a truck with a 454 BB with about 500HP and big grippy tires.

Yes, the bolt count is associated with the cover, not the ring itself.

I WISH GM put the 8.5" 10 bolt in these cars. Then the whole rear end would be an issue for 99% of us. We got stuck with the 7.5" 10 bolt

    Is a Stronger 10 Bolt Possible ?

I have a whining noise comming from my rear when I`m on the gas & doing about 80 - 100 KPH I don`t have enough money now to replace with a 12 bolt or equivalant . Now I know that the 10 bolt is crap but if I replace everything like stronger axles, a diff cover & say an Eaton Posi that should hold up allot better right ? I don`t intended to drag my car and I don`t plan on making anymore than say 450 HP on motor .
It`s only a weekend car I`am the eleventh owner of the car so I`m guessing it may have been hammerd on a bit in the past . So as far as parts go it`s about $1,200 - 1,500 CND compared to $4,000 for a 12 bolt .

Any Opinion`s other than the obvious ( the 10 bolt is crap )
    Thanks .

Whining could be shot side bearings, which would be cheap and easy to replace. Otherwise I'm not at all opposed to beefing up a 7.5" 10 bolt a little bit. I'd say a eaton posi and support cover are as far as I would go. Skip the axles.

Thanks Cutlass I`m not too shure what the noise / vibration is yet but I hope it`s something as simple as that , I forgot to mention that my car is an A4 with a Torsen diff & I have not heard too many good things about the Torsen .

A ten bolt may break when you burn rubber in reverse, up hill (post by experience).

You may be able to get by for a few months by pulling the cover and flushing all the metal bits out of the case and bearings. Bearings are tough. You probably just lost a few tooth-ends. A quiuck-temporary fix is what I mentioned above (hopefully for you).

    Good Luck ).

I was told that Ford rear ends would fit, is that true?
