Sebring Silver- 98 Z-28 camaro
Another cam queston for you automatic guys
I bet you guys get tired of hearing people post what cam is the best, so, well, what cam would be the best for my daily driven Z-28? It's a 98 Z-28 with Long tubes, 3" ORY, LS6 intake, SLP airbox and Holley powershot air filter, MSD wires, cold temp thermostat and that's about it. It's a 3.23 gear car as well, runs damn strong but I want a little more out of it with a nice lopey idle. I'm going with a 3000 RPM stall converter and LS6 valve springs when I do the swap but as far as cam selection I'm a little confused since there are so many cam grinds out there. I'm looking at the TR 224/224 on a 114 LSA, I was told to keep my lobe seperation angle at 114 and not lower due to driveability. I want the most power and best sound from the mid of the power band on up through 6,000 RPM's. Basically a highway car that makes power from a roll being the LS1's like being up in the RPM's anyway.
Any tips or advise is appreciated, thanks guys

the TR 224 is a nice cam. makes it's power up in the higher rpms though.

im not a huge fan of thunders 224 cam
i like the comp 224/224 581/581 114 lsa.
it has a higher lift than TR and makes more power threwout the band.
i have above comp cam in my car.
i also have a 3000 stall and above combo is perfect2000 nhra edition formula
a few bolt ons, 379 rwhp

Thanks, sounds like a better cam. I was kinda leary about the Thunder Racing cams basically because I've never heard of them before and didn't know the quality of their parts. I only run comp cams in my older motors and made good power, thanks again!

With a 3000 stall, you can go with a bigger cam.
You also said two things that contradict.....
You want: 1. Lopey idle
and
2. High LSA for driveability.
Lopey idle will come with a lower LSA (like 112).
With my comp cam 220/224 .581 114 lsa you barely hear the lope at idle at all. With an auto (lower idle rpm) you may hear it a bit more, but not much.
With a 3000 stall, you might consider a 228 or 232 cam with 114 or 112 lsa. Quite a bit more power up top. The only power loss with the bigger cam would be below 3000 rpm. So it wouldn't matter with your stall.Last edited by silverTA2002; 05-31-2006 at 06:49 PM.

If you want 3000 rpm of stall you need to get a 3500 conv. I just put a 3000 in my car, 98 Z, and at about 2400 rpm it spins or pushes of the line.

how driveable is a 3500 RPM stall? This is my first automatic LS1 car BTW, I'm trying to figure out what the best set up is while being able to drive it daily if I need to.
