Best headers, best catback, soundclips etc.
In an effort to eliminate the countless "best headers" and "what catback should I get" threads, I am making a sticky to hopefully eliminate these threads.
If everyone would post up their entire exhaust setups(headers, X/Y/H, & catback) and feel free to include any pictures, soundclips or opinions as well. Hopefully we can get a lot of our experienced pros in here who have experience with multiple setups and we can get a good thread going with a lot of info to help out the less experienced people with exhaust issues. I have also provided the link to LS1sounds below which allows you to listen to tons of different exhaust setups and gives you an idea of what you might be looking for. http://ls1sounds.com/ Please try to keep the information technical in this thread as well. I will be weeding out non technical info. Example format: Headers: Y/X/H-pipe: Catback: Video/soundclips

Here is my exhaust setup.
Headers: Pacesetter Long Tubes, Ceramic Coated Texas Speed Trual Duals, 3 inches all the way back. Dynomax bullets were originally on the setup, recently changed to SLP Shotgun Resonators (thanks SSwt00SS) Sound: Reasonable at highway speeds, low growl. Cold starts are LOUD, with the bullet mufflers the setup was very deep, under 2,000rpm it's no louder than any other catback setup. With the SLP Resonators nothing is modest, or subtle. You will be followed by cops (happened today) you will get noticed, a lot. It is VERY, VERY loud. NOT to be used on a DD setup. Soundclips - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1VaCy9jgo58 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RDkdUy2u228 Verdict: Great for power, if clearance is an issue, get stiffer shocks because the setup will scrape on a lowered car, and in my case with 16inch wheels. Keep the mufflers that come with the setup unless you like to be noticed! Previous Setup: ![]() New Setup:

HEADERS: JetHot brand 1-3/4" longtube headers (super easy install)
Y PIPE: JetHot off road Y pipe (fits fine but hangs a little low near driver's side framerail) CATBACK: Stock 112,000 mile catback (quiet when cruising, loud when I want it to be) Car is a 2000 Camaro SS A4 and ran 11.77@115 with this setup. Major engine/performance mods are 226 cam (112lsa), LS6 intake, and 3600 converter. Mustang Dyno numbers are 344rwhp/314rwtq...I wouldn't hold much faith in them though, due to loose converter... ![]() Warm restart and rev: http://videos.streetfire.net/video/7...ee00e52179.htm Warm idle: http://videos.streetfire.net/video/0...ee00e4cd19.htm Cold start: http://videos.streetfire.net/video/d...ee00e4740f.htm I have already had a BORLA Adjustable catback on the car, and also a MAGNAFLOW catback. NEITHER provided any gains, other than gains in noise volume...I attribute it to a well worn stock muffler. I do plan to weld in a cutout for drag racing days though.

I have five different set-ups to post.
1. SLP Loudmouth, stock cats and manifolds Loved how this sounded at the time. No pics, install took 45 minutes. Performance was right on par with expected. Stock internal LS1. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iUBLeEMoXiU 2. SLP Longtubes, SLP hi-flow cats, SLP Loudmouth, SLP y-pipe This was the worst sounding exhaust I have heard on an LS1 F-Body. Car has stock heads and a Lunati 226/234 554/575 112. It was nothing but loud rasp. Idle sounded good though. Performance was okay. The SLP headers hang LOW. I scraped them several times and the car was on the stock springs. They also started rusting after a little over a year on a weekend warrior. This is how it sounded... http://home.comcast.net/~mrluos/raspy.wmv 3. Kooks 1 7/8" longtubes, custom 3" duals with bullet mufflers The motor is an iron block 402 with a large cam and heads. Sounded great, but it was LOUD with the bullet mufflers. Powerwise it was outstanding, although it could have been a little better with mandrel bends. Clearance was outstanding. Car was dropped on ProKit springs and I never once hit the headers or exhaust like I did with the SLP longtubes at stock height. No pictures with that set-up that I can find, but it was pretty much like the pictures below but with bullet mufflers. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2plmJJCTvJA 4. Kooks 1 7/8" longtubes, custom 3" duals with Magnaflow mufflers Motor is the 402 with a large cam. Nothing has changed under the hood from the set-up above. This was much better for me. Performance was actually a touch better with the Magnaflow mufflers over the bullet mufflers. Sound is so much better. Much smoother, fairly tame for basic driving, but sounds great when WOT. Fitment was a little rough. Hard to fit the 5x8 mufflers under the rear of the car. Body required a little banging for them to fit right. Mufflers are offset 3" in/out. Now, we ran into a problem with the over the axle part of the duals when I installed a larger Moser 9". We had to cut the over the axle section down to 2.5" pipes. Obviously the rearend is not in the car for this picture. Sound clips. http://home.comcast.net/~mrluos/Idling.wmv (Idle, 125MPH flyby, clutch drop) http://home.comcast.net/~mrluos/teaser2.wmv (Drive by, burnout) 5. Kooks 1 7/8" longtubes, QTP 3" dual cutouts, custom duals Everything is the same as #4, but add the cutouts. Power is up with them open, and I only run them open at the track. Way too loud for normal driving. Just the trip to the track is annoying. Sounds excellent though. Sound clip http://home.comcast.net/~mrluos/OpenExhaust.wmv (Idle, dyno, warming tires, 11 second pass)

Here's my newly installed SLP Dual/Dual catback.
Actually it's a Dual/Single since I don't have any tips yet, lol... There is NO "ring of silence" in it, and you can see straight through outlet to outlet. Anyway, I kept seeing that SLP dual/dual was the exhaust to get if you wanted flow and quiet together. Didn't know it was possible, but I do know that I absolutely LOVE this sound! It's as quiet as stock when cruising, or idling, but has a very sweet, different sound at WOT. I like it MUCH better than all the noise, and it feels just the same as it always has power-wise. As a bonus, since it's so damn quiet, the 3600 stall seems barely noticeable unless you get on it...it's like a stock Camaro, only quicker, lol... Setup consists of JetHot longtubes, and ORY, Dynomax I and over axle pipe, clamped to an OEM SLP dual/dual stainless muffler and SLP stainless tailpipes. I ordered some "dual/dual" copycat tips for it last night, and have to make two hanger brackets at work for the rearmost tailpipe hangers. That will calm that shakey muffler look. http://www.fquick.com/videos/New_SLP...l_muffler/4853 |

My setup,
Hooker jethot coated 1 3/4 lt headers, Jegs 3'' universal x- pipe with dual cutouts, 2 12'' Dynomax bullets, under the axle, then 2 more 12'' bullets, and Megs stainless tips, no cats. Today I ordered 2 3'' DMH elec. cutouts, and plan to go over the axle next weekend, hopefully Sound is noticeable at idle, no drone while cruising, at wot, it is loud. My Setup:
Headers: XS/SS Autochrome Long Tubes. 321 Stainless, fit perfectly. Only issue is the driver's side collector is angled towards the floor, causing the Y-pipe to hit unless you get it bent downwards. I just replaced the entire y-pipe and catback with a true dual setup. Exhaust: Custom True Dual setup made by a local exhaust shop. Its attatched to the headers with V-band clamps. 3" off the headers to an H-pipe, reduced to 2.5" after the H-pipe. Both pipes run down the passenger side, over the axle, and out the back to Magnaflow mufflers. Headers after painting them with Duplicolor High-Temp Black: ![]() Exhaust: ![]() ![]() On the dyno:

Headers: Pacesetter LT's
Y-pipe: Pacesetter ORY Catback: SLP loudmouth II Duals. sounds great IMO, maybe a little too "raw" for some people's taste. It has a loud and rough idle b/c of the cam, good note throughout the rpm's, and plug your ears for WOT. It gets very very raspy right at 2500rpm's for some reason, but then gets smoother again at 3000rpm's. |
