I hear a lot of horror stories about changing them out & it has me a little scared to try it. Anyone know of any write-ups? I searched & couldn't really find one. Thanks.

They are not too bad to do. The fronts are harder than the rears. I you are not sure you can do the job then have a professional help you with the job or just do it for you. You can get hurt taking the springs off.
I called the shop & they want $360 just to swap out the fronts & do an alignment. I think it is worth a try to do it myself for that much money. I will definitely get a spring compressor.
You should replace the ball joints while you have it apart. ANd, you will have to have an alignment done when you are done.
Good thread. I'd be interested in a write up too. I'll search a later when I get off work...if I find one, I'll throw up a link.
There is a good write-up for front/rear shock swaps on LS1howto.com
I have pulled mine out and reinstalled them while changing out the K-member -- not bad at all to do. Mine will be coming out again for installation of the Konis I purchased from Keith.
Fronts are a pain in the ass. You should get new strut mounts for the fronts, the old ones are usually so rusted out that you can't get them off. I recommend Moog.
