Why does my transmission get so hot?

2000 SS, T-56, 86k miles.

Ive noticed over the last few months that after driving about 5 miles, my trans seems to get really hot. it radites up through the car into the cab. If i take my shifter knob off, or slide the boot down, the stick can easily get too hot too touch, and the center console on either side of the boot will get hot enough to make my knee sweat through my jeans.

I'm hoping that it because i cut a little too much of the rubber boot off when i installed my pro-5.0 but I'm not sure.

My other possible culprit is that I have a small exhaust leak where the y-pipe attaches to the I-pipe, but I would think that while driving, this escaped hot air would not add any heat.

Could it be that my trans fluid is low and I'm building up heat from friction? I had my clutch replaced about 5k miles ago and had the trans totally drained and refilled, I've never noticed any leaks

I had the same problem after my Pro5.0 install because I too cut a little too much form the boot. I ended up getting another one because of it. That seem to fix it. I'd start looking for a boot.

I also plan on putting some dynomat at least on the tunnel and floor boards when I replace my carpet next summer. I hope it will lower the cabin temps and help lower road noise.

yeah i contemplating dynamatting my interior but that stuffs expensive

I think the main problem with the heat buildup is the exhaust pipe running alongside the trans tunnel. When my g/f's fingers get cold I have her put her fingers in the ashtray for a few minutes, warms them right up. My car is a basically factory stock '02 ta 'vert w/ Hurst shifter. The exhaust pipe running through the trans tunnel throws off a mega-ton of heat. Dyna mat would definately help but I dont feel like pulling up my rugs and taking out my seats to install it on a 53K car. If it gets too hot I crank up the air or put the top down. LOL :drivin:

If it really bothers you, Dynamat it. I should do this for my exhaust noise. I love the LM1, but it shouldn't be coming up through the floor boards, just in through the window.
