    What are these wires for?

I was messing around with my plastic dash cover thingy that trims out the radio, a/c vents, and a/c controls. My car doesn't have the traction control but where the button should be ( next to the fog light switch ) there is the block off. But it still has wires that plug into the back of the block off. Could I just get a t/c switch and hook it up to make it work? Thanks.

Are you sure your car doesn't have traction control? Some of these cars were built without the switch-my car was.I bought my 02 new and the window sticker said traction control-but there was no switch installed in the dash-just a block off plate.I already had a service manual from my 98 that I traded in so I knew what to look for mechanically to verify the system was there.Look underneath at the back axle-if there is a wire going to both back wheels instead of just going into the middle of the rear axle-you have traction control and all you need is the switch to turn it on and off.If you have traction control but no switch-it will be on all the time-you can't turn it off and it comes on automatically when you start the car.Anyway they ordered a switch and installed it-service guy said it happened from time to time,I said no harm no foul. The ABS module looks different also-but the easiest way to tell is looking at the back axle.

I would GUESS that GM uses generic wire harness, to cover all the options for the vehicles, so if your vehicle does not have traction control (as mine does not) they place a block off plate in front of the wire that would be used to connect it up.

I hate to say this, but the traction control option from the factory is not just a ABs thing, there is a ASR module that pulgs into the throttle body for the computer to physically move the gas pedal if needed.

All cars will tell you if the vehicle has low traction, even mine does and I do not have traction control at all. Any time the computer senses that the front wheels are traveling slower/faster than the rear wheels the low traction light will illuminate. This does not mean you ahve traction control.

OK-who said it was just a ABS thing? We were discussing how to tell whether you have the system installed on the car or not-not how does it work.I hate to tell you this -but it does more than that. The first thing it does is retard timing to reduce power from the engine. If the rear wheels are still spinning faster than the front it controls the throttle by wire to close the throttle. The last measure it takes is to apply the rear brakes(or just one brake) to reduce rear wheel spin.Once the rear wheel speed matches the front it will return control to the driver. The ABS will still alert you to low traction conditions under braking-but not under acceleration(according to the service manual).I mentioned the ABS because it looks different(they add a section to it)W/traction control-not because I thought that was all it did.

well i figured out that if you dont have the sensors in the hubs then you dont have traction control. it is just a generic wiring harness gm used. gosh dang i forgot how long ago i started this thread

Even if your car does not have TCS, the wiring harness will still be there!

    1996 Impala SS

Hi everybody, new member. I have decided to trade in my 96 Impala SS for a Camaro. I fell in love as soon as I drove my buddy's 00 SS. I found a 2000 SS for sale with a 6 speed. I just noticed that it doesn't have traction control. I am coming from a 96 Impala which is tail happy as anything in the rain/snow and it only has the LT1. I barely drive it in the snow, so that's not really an issue, but the rain is. My questions are: do I really need TCS on an LS1 car and can I add TCS without too much difficulty if I decide I need it?

Yeah, driving my friend's '00 let me find out how far sideways these cars can go. He swears by T/C in the rain.

    Thanks, glad to be here.

So do we have a concrete answer to the TC w/out button question? I'm curious... is there not an RPO code we could check rather than searching for wires on the axle?
