newbie lookin for ideas

I bought an 02' Z28 convertible with 30k and not even a butt wrinkle in the seats about a year ago. Going through the usual process, buy a nice ride, plan on keepin it oem reliable, drive it for a while, get the mod itch...probably goin to hell, swore I would not mess with this one...now I am lookin for the easy cheap beginer mods to find a lil more power, and driveability(fun)... it is nice and absolutely factory fresh..curious about simple tweaks like the intake heater bypass mod(why is that even on there? if its that cold out you dont need to be on the road!), and what torque converter (yeah stuck with an auto) would you put in to hook up a lil better in a daily driver? How hard is it to swap to a six speed man. trans., would it be more effective to build the slush box, or go manual... all these questions and more comin soon to a forum near you! haha... thanks! hope to find out the usual basic mods to get me on the right path so I dont go through the whole car five times and waste a pile of cash I dont have...
