New Canuck
Hi...
I live in Canada, and I'm a cert' welder and fabricator. I've made some fun stuff.
I drive a 96 (97-98 converted) Nissan 240sx.
I just picked up a '02 LR4 4.8l voretc motor. Which is goin in the 240.
I'm having a hard time finding the required info on this though.
Maybe you guys can help.
1. GTO oil pan and front sump set will fit the blcok correct?
2. LS1/LS6 intake will also fit. Since they are cathedral ports right?
3. Can an LS2 timing chain and tensioner be used?
4. I was told that the cast iron block, can be turned into a 6.2L with the right parts. Can anyone confirm?
5. I thought I had this one figured out, but then I saw a pic that buggered it up.
Which LS series motor had the alternator located down low and the PS up high? I thought it was the LS1's but then I saw an LS1 with the alternator located up high and the PS located below it. Like it is on my LR4.
So now I'm confused, I don't know what to get to locate the alternator to the lower side and the PS to the high side.
6. I'm using a t-56 tranny. I believe I need the bellhousing off of an f-body. Can anyone confirm?
7. Do all LS based PCM's use the same connectors? I have the LR4 wiring harness, but no computer. Just wondering if the PCM connectors will fit any other PCM other than the one the came with it.
8. I"m having a hard time finding aftermarket parts for the 4.8. Can anyone link me any?
thanks in advance,
PinkNinja!

So... many... questions...
One answer: The F-body has the low mount alternator. I understand that the F-body and truck alternator have the same mounting lugs. If it is mounted high then the engine is from a Corvette. Not sure about the GTO layout.
Welcome!

MY 4.8 definitely has a high mount alternator. But like I said, that's where I was confused.
Thanks for the welcome!
I haven't browsed through this site much, yet. I'll be starting a build in a spare S14 chassis soon.
I'm on the sidelines on whether to keep it 4.8 or go bigger.
quick story on the motor.
It's a 2002 Silverado 4.8 with just under 110,000kms on it.
I got it complete minus AC comp. Tranny. And PCM.
Also the passenger side head is missing its rocker girdle, couple lifters, and it's push rods. Diver side is unmolested.
This is where I'm undecided...
I picked it up for $100CDN

Yes that is what I am refering to. I was told that the 4.8/5.3 had the thickest cylinder walls and could be bored and stroked to a 6.2L...
My crossmember has to modified anyways. So if it'll work then that's what's going on it
Pulled the heads off last night. Passenger side will need to be honed. So that means the driver side is going to get it.
When I pulled off the pass' side head. All pushrods were gone. There were 3 lifters, and the rocker girdle was gone.
I'm not pissed they are gone, but the guy could have at least mentioned it. Oh well.
I'm sorry. I'm relatively new to the SBC V8. I've played with rotaries, SR's, KA's, RB20' 25's and 26's....
But the whole LS series motor is new to me. So mnay variants and lego like parts

for $100 you can't be mad. that thing can be a real rpm monster if you want it. What kind of heads are you looking at getting, or are you going to port and mill the stockers?

I would LOVE to make this thing an RPM monster. But I don't know how to go about doing that. Nothing I'g rather hear than a V8 revving up higher than something like a Honda....
If you have any links or tips on how I can go about acheiving this. That would be great.
I'm not very fond of Hondas. I like my torque.
Oh... I thought you were making a reference to my noob status to V8's lol.
Thanks!

I know it is alot to read but this will give you some decent info on our motors

you can try talking to texas speed about cam choics. I don't know how far that 4.8 can be bored out but big bore with short stroke=rpm.

.....I love you, lol
That's the most useful post I think I've EVER seen,
On happier news.
My old boss just hooked me up.
New computer
LS2 intake
LS2 cam
LS2 push rods
LS2 lifter and springs
Z06 fuel pump
Z06 injectors
Z06 fuel rail
And a few other things I forgot.
All parts have less than 20,000km on them
I didn't spend a dime

^Interesting...
I've never heard of people porting a plastic intake.
Does anyone have any links to aftermarket internals for the 4.8?
I've been searching but with no luck so far.
