To Tune or not to Tune?

So far I have an SLP CAI with lid, smooth bellows and 85mm MAF. Soon I'll be getting a ported throttle body and Pacesetter LT headers with a cutout and Magnaflow catback exhaust. I know a tune wouldn't be necessary with these mods, but I also hear a tune can wake up even a stock LS1. Is it worth the $150 and a drive up north or mail order to get it tuned after I get all that done?

i think so and I don't have longtubes. I just had my computer tuned by Frost and am extremely happy. the car seems more responsive and ready to go.

It's worth the money. In order to take full advantage of the mods you're doing, you are definately going to want to get a tune.

I would say yes to the tune, headers tend to make an LS1 run rich, tuning will straighten it out.

I would ditch the 85mm and get the stock one back on.

Nothing wrong with the 85mm if its a GM Maf. Usually they need tunes and he is getting one I believe.

    GET A TUNE!

I did the exact same stuff and decided to go get a dyno tune. I only got 6 hp out of the tune. Of course, it was bad weather conditions with extreme heat and humidity, but a mail order tune would've been more appropriate. Save some cash anyway. Least I got the cats, smog, etc. tuned out...

The 85mm MAF reports a higher frequency than the OEM counterpart which fattens up the AFR at WOT. Some cars pick up 15 easy HP going from 11:1 to 12.5-12.9:1 and some may only pickup 1-2HP (unusual but it can happen). Even for the car that rolls in with perfect 12.9:1 AFR already, there is typically 5-7rwhp more to find in timing. Nothing is absolute though!

I thought the 85mm leaned it up at WOT Good thing I got money saved for a dyno then

Same, going from an 11.1 to a 12.5 AFR would definitly be leaner. But i think a 12.5 is more of where you want it at WOT

I Have a darn near Stock Ws.6 (SLP Air Lid & Flowmaster Catback Exhaust) and was thinking about a tune from Frost, Would it really be beneficial? If he can WAKE UP my car, its SO worth the $125 IMO

It's worth more than a handheld, but really you would get more out of it if you made some other mods first. That Flowmaster exhaust unfortunately has proven on the dyno that I tune on to gain almost nothing over stock. I could give you a sales pitch but I'd rather be honest. You may not gain but 5-10 rwhp. You will get lowered fan temps, top speed limiter and skip shift removed, improved knock handling and more small changes. You'd be better off starting with a set of LTs.

So Frost, how much HP gain would you say if I got a tune through you after getting my LT headers, catback exhaust and cutout? Just a ballpark...also, any mileage gains? After doing my SLP cold air intake, smooth bellows, MAF and my ported and polished throttle body, I've seen an almost 2mpg increase

He wouldn't give me a guesstimate, because as he said before "nothing is absolute". And also, just as he said before, unless you've got the basic LTs, it would be better off to save your money, get some, and then get it tuned.

Just repeating what the best tuner out there, has stated

He ordered one from there. He would have the part number probably. I believe it is a universal one. Comes with an adapter.
