HP Tuner
Hi guys. Im really thinking about getting HP tuners. I want to learn to make my own small adjustments like the idle, fan temps, etc and upgrades in the near future. I read some information on HP tuners from their site and from this site. I will most likely get the pro version.
Im trying to understand how the credits work. I know that certain vehicles require you to have an amount of credits to tune it out. Once you use the credits for that particular VIN you can keep tuning without needing more credits?
I believe the software comes with 6 credits included. So everytime I want to make changes to a different vehicle after I run out of credits I will have to purchase additional credits? Once I tune a VIN does that mean I will be able to tune it as many times I want without needing to buy additional credits?
Also my car is basic mods at this moment, do I need to by any accesories with HP tuners? I also know that I will have OBD scanner abilities with Hp tuner. Does it covers CAN as well?
I have an OBD scanner but is kinda of old. I had tried to read codes in a few 07 + vehicles and i haven't been able to link. I was told that some of the newer vehicles use CAN and if my scanner is not compatible with CAN it will not link. So I'm deciding if it is worth getting HP tuner and a scanner or if I can to both with HP tuners only. Thanks in advance.Last edited by JayTA98; 05-02-2011 at 02:09 PM.

Ok I read the FAQ questions on HP tuner site. i don't know how did i miss them lol. It cleared some of my questions but I'm still confused as the differences single vehicle as year model credits. I guess unless I purchase unlimited GM V8 I will have to buy credits for additional vehicles. Once i purchase a credits for my car will I have to purchase credits again for my vehicle if I make any changes?

Once you purchase credits for a VIN, you can tune that vehicle as many times you want to, forever, without another charge for additional credits.
One thing most everyone will agree that you'll need, is a wideband setup. You don't need it to make small changes like you listed, but you will need it once you actually start dialing in fueling and timing.2002 Silverado Z71 ECSB HPTuners tuned by yours truly

I have hp tunners and just so u know it comes with 8 credits. I used 2 for my pontiac and 2 for my friends LS1 camaro. I still have 4 left. if it works like mine u can do 4 cars.. depending on year model i think?? I have a 04 and he has a 99 camro. you should be good to go. make sure u get a wide band so u can hook it to the lap top with hp wile u scan.. makes things a lot easier...

As stated, a good wideband is essential. I would also recommend reading up on whatever you can to garner a good understanding of EFI systems. Both the HP Tuners forum and Greg Banish's books are excellent resources. After reading his books, I attended his EFI training seminar last year and found it well worth the expense.

So will need the wideband too? What can I do with the wideband vs not having it? Thanks for the replies guys.

Wideband is the only way to see what is going on in real time when making calibration changes.

You only pay for license if you want to tune the vehicle. Scanning is free.
