only thing that you can really do to beef it up is replace it with a 12 bolt.

Or install a diff girdle until you have the bucks to get a Moser. I have twisted my Trans input shaft and yet to break my rear gears or axle with the girdle. I think that speaks to the extra strength you get with one.
Sorry, it's kind of a bad picture ... But, you get the idea .... right?

I have wanted a girdle also. How much did yours cost?
My differential makes no noise, I am not going to do anything until if/when it does. 65k on my car.

Like $185 from Sumitt Racing. Worth every penny imo.
I went for 3.73's which has less meat on the ring. So, a girdle was to get some strength back plus more.
Two nice things;
- By putting the girdle on and applying the RIGHT pressure (READ the instructions)
you stop almost all distorting of the bearing caps and your rear end will last much longer. No whinning with my gears either.
- Plus it has a second fill hole now and a nice drain hole as well. Aids fluid changes. It's a lot less messy because you don't have to crack the rear open anymore. Plus you don't have to retention like other covers after a oil change. ;-)Last edited by Mecinoid; 09-26-2007 at 03:01 AM.

I dont believe the girdle does squat except make changing the fluid easier. If you want your 10 bolt to last, don't drag race it.

I would like to add this:
I am very glad that GM made a strong engine instead of putting money into a bullet proof differential. I would much rather spend 2k on a differential than put 2k into my engine and then get 310 RWHP. I have had no problem with noise or anything else with either of my Trans Ams, a '98 or the current '00. A lot of rear end problems are driver abuse.
If you want a drag race car, you have to spend $$$ on whatever anyway.

12 bolt is a gm rear end (Has 12 bolts around the rear end cover). Much stronger than a 10 bolt (stock on our cars, has 10 bolts holding on the differential cover)it has a 8.75" ring gear, the 10 bolt has a 7.5" ring gear. They are OK for f-bodys with an auto.
The ford 9" has a 9" ring gear and are practacly bullet proof. suited much better for high horsepower or Manual transmission cars because of the way they are designed. The torque arm mount absorbs the shock much better and you will experience a lot less noise from your gears if you like to go to the track every now and then.
Dana 60 is the beast of the bunch. It is a mopar rearend and I believe Strange is the only one that makes one for the F-body. It has a 9.75" ring gear. Can handle just about any amount of horsepower but more modifications are needed to be done if purchaceing one. Like shortening your driveshaft to get it to fit. hope this helps

Monterey Maroon Metalic- 2000 Z28
Not to thread jack, but my goal is to put down 400-450whp in my A4. This car rides on C5 Z06 wheels with BFG KDW II's (295's in back) and will never get slicks or be taken to the track for that matter. What rearend do you guys recommend? I'm thinking the 10 bolt might blow up during the 400-450whp dyno pulls.
