I've read that 10 bolts can be built up to take 420 hp. Up grading to aftermarket axles, weld the axle tubes, aftermarket TA differential cover, replacing Torsen T2 differential with a Eaton or Auburn unit, use a high-quality ring-and-pinion set.
Mine is a 9" Ford, I have a M6 thats the reason for me. I would have gone to a 12 bolt but I have heard that 12 bolts can hold up to 650hp, after that they start to have problems.

mine started making noise 2 weeks ago, so I parked it til I could find time to work on it. Everything was fine a year ago when I installed the 4.11s. Tore into my rear end and everything is fine, cept the differential. The magnet was coated about 1/2" thick of shavings covering it. The teeth inside the differential are chewed and chipped all to hell...lol. Gave me a good excuse to install whats been in my living room for just over 3 weeks now. Talk about coincidence, order stuff and then the old stuff breaks...hmmmm. Won't have that problem hopefully not EVER again.

But most definately, auto's eventually a 12 bolt is nice, Manuals go with a 9".

    C-clips and ring gears.
    Housing as well.

I wouldn't waste any money upgrading the 10 bolt. That is just pissing away money. If you race it, it will eventually break.

    9" > _________
Unless you are making 1500RWHP, then maybe the Dana is in order.

You don't race until you have the money for the 9".

I can't recall if there is a c-clip eliminator for the 10 bolt or not. If so, that will help.
But yeah, a T/A cover and be nice to it.

The first reply in this thread of "EVERYTHING" is correct. Just do a search for threads about folks that had a 10 bolt blow up on them! There are a number of different culprits! The most notable of them all is probably the 7.5" ring gear.

Personally, I know my 10 bolt is likely going to give up on me eventually, so I've been saving for a 9" rear. Then I can slap a nice tire on and see what a 4,000 rpm launch feels like!
2002 Camaro SS M6, 2.5 PRC 5.3L heads, TFS 228/230 cam, FAST 92, bolt ons + a 10 lb bottle in the back.

1989 Corvette L98, A4, Full bolt ons, etc.

I'm gonna get a nice cover just because I feel like it. lol. I will look into the c clip eliminator. I have heard of it before. I think I'll look into axles too. I never will be putting down over 450hp. maybe400

400RWHP is more than enough to kill a 10 bolt.

At altitude I have seen 320RWHP cars (390RWHP corrected) break them on Nitto DR's.
    Hit or miss.
