Thinking about getting the S60 Rear
I have been buying parts that add power to my car, and this whole time I know I should upgrade the rear because it is the weakest link in the car. I have been looking into the Moser 12 bolt and ford 9 inch but I think I like the S-60 the best. It seems like it has the best durability for peace of mind and at the same price with less loss. I don't need it yet but I don't want to wait until I break the stocker either. Is anyone here running this S60 rear and even if you are not I would like to hear all of your opinions on it. Thanks in advance guys/girls.

Red- 2000 SS '89 IROC-Z
There was an article put out by some magazine (I think) about their LS7 Camaro project. They used a T56 tranny and a Strange S60. Seemed to work out for them. If you google surf enough I'm sure you'll find it.

In my eyes yes i love my 9 inch I know s60 is great but the benefits with the 9 inch ease of working on it remove it from the housing and work on it on a bench. everybody makes parts for them and I got 31 spline axle you can go up to 40 if you wish. But when most drag cars are running 9 inch in some way you can't go wrong. But if the s60 is a little cheaper then go with it it's strong no doubt. Just my 15 cents

Cool, so does anyone know for sure what the losses are in the 9" and the S60. I have read so many forums and from site to site people have different arguments. Some say the S60 eats more power and when I first started reading on them it said that the S60 had less loss than both the 12 bolt and 9". Makes no sense except people are posting bias opinions in different sites.
So if anyone has/or knows where I can look for % loss in the two rears I would appreciate it.

Shit I must've been thinking of another performance group. They use Moser, but would probably still be a great place to ask.

This is what I found in another forum
I have the strange dana 60 in the Formula and here is why
Strange Engineering
Strange S60 Dana Rear End
F-Body Dana Rear End Features:
25lbs heavier than a 12 bolt, 10lbs heavier than a 9"
Standard True-Track Diff w/Power-Lock
35 Spline Posi
All new casting using 3.0" OD Tubing, 1/4" Thick
Large ring gear than 12 bolt (by 0.875) and 9" (by 0.75)
Standard Dana Gear can handle 1200RWHP
Many Gear Options
LT1 build in mounts - LS1 requires backing plates to be sent in!
Driveshaft will need to be shortened 1.625" (don't do this a strange chromemoly isn't that expensive)
PRS60T Strange Dana S60, True Track, 35 spline, Chrome Cover,Choose Gear Ratio $2295.99 buy
PRS60S Strange Dana S60, Spool, Hy-Tuf Axles, Chrome Cover,Choose Gear Ratio, 35 or 40 Spline $2049.99 buy
PRS60C Strange Aluminum Cover Upgrade $60.00 buy
GMBBP GM Backing Plates (no need to send core) $240.00 buy
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I went through ron @ vengance racing
Numbers published by Evan Smith in National Dragster show that because of the reduced offset between the pinion shaft axis and the axle centerline, the Dana 60 has lower drivetrain losses than either the 12-bolt or the 9-inch:
Dana 60: 5%
GM 12-Bolt: 7%
Ford 9-inch: 10%
I went with the spool.

That was with a spool a true trac would be more money and you have to get a differnt driveshaft which is more money. It all adds up fast

Well, I went ahead and ordered it. I should see it in about 3 weeks. I also had my best friend who is a Mechanical Engineer, do some strength tests on the drive shaft. He told me my car was putting 55,000psi on the aluminum D.S. while it can only handle about 47,000psi. the steed depending on which type was about 58,000 making it a close call. Chromoly is up at 66,000psi and the carbon fiber at about 80,000psi. So the Chromoly would be the best choice for the money. I did read that the carbon fiber is about 6lbs i believe and will absorb some of the impact making it easier on the rear and diff.

What made you choose the s60? Just curious.
3 weeks is quite the wait IMO. I had my 9" in 4 days.
