    something is going any ideas?

something is crapping out on my car but i dont know what it might be. from the sound and feel of it i think it might be something in the drivetrain. whenever i hit it hard theres a popping/clunking sound. not sure where it might be coming from. but the car feels like its lost its balls. its doesnt launch like it used to, instead if feels like something isnt catching to use the power. the tires dont even wanna chirp anymore when i floor it from a stop. i was thinking it was rear end or something. any ideas?

where does the sound come from? Sounds like you're describing a broken tranny mount which will bang against the floor of the car.

Is your car an a4 or an m6? Does the RPM flutter like the engine is trying and getting a resistance or increase steady? Need to narrow this down a little.

its an a4 the rpms seem to stay steady. its when i give it some extra gas when this happens usually either right from the go or while im driving slow around 20 and then give it gas itll do it again around 2500 to 3000 rpm. its like a pop clunk sound i dont know wat other way to describe it. like a backfire with a clunk to it. and like i said the car doesnt wanna spin the tires off the line anymore

Sounds like maybe a misfire problem if it's backfiring. Changed your plugs/wires/coils lately? Could possibly be and issue with fuel injectors to. Maybe run some cleaner through the system. If you could post some vid it might help.

Could be plugs, wires, coils. Possibly cats. I'd start with the plugs and wires first if you haven't done them yet. They're the cheapest way to start. If your not getting a SES light, probably not going to get any codes but you could try to pull some codes on the off chance it may throw one. Might even be an exhaust leak, check your exhaust to make sure everything is sealed up - but that usually won't result in a loss of power.

i havent done spark plugs and wires in over 2 years. ive had a code for a bad cat once but that was a while ago before this noise and i never got that code again. recently i got a code for the rear o2 sensor. would a dirty maf cause similar problems?

A dirty maf shouldn't cause backfiring. Wouldn't hurt to clean it though. Sounds like the car could use a good tune up with plugs and wires, and take care of the rear o2 sensor too. Might be a combination of things causing the symptoms your describing.

I have a thread from when my car's cat went south.. I used to get an intermitent rear o2 code too. Then one day my engine (I thought) sounded like it was comming apart.. When I removed the factory cat after having the code scanned I found that the grid like insides of my cat had actually split down the center.. Not saying that IS your trouble but could be.imho..

Best place to start would be tuning it. Easiest and most likely source of problems. Like I said though it could be a combination of things, but hopefully the tune will take care of it. Keep us posted.

Misspoke- I meant tune up - you said the plugs/wires hadn't been changed in two years. Start there and work through the rest. If the problem continues let us know. If it changes at all let us know too, like I said it may be more than one thing as well.
