Rear End Leak?
Hey,
I went to my transmission shop to rebolt something that fell off (don't ask) and the mechanic noticed that my rear seal was leaking. He said I should get it fixed, however someone else told me not to worry about it, because all fbodys seals leak.
What the story?

Any leak is not good. I would just pull the driveshaft and replace the seal.

so, just check it often and make sure fluids are in there. You don't think I need to replace the seal?

if you wanted to you could, it might stop it for a while, i bet it had been leaking for a long time and you just never noticed it before, one of those things you would of never noticed if you didnt take it into the shop

My '97 leaked till i replaced the pinion seal, never leaked again, my 99 doesn't leak, and the '69 chevelle SS I just sold never leaked (12 bolt). I don't support overlooking any leak, it makes you look bad to have oil spots. . .

You can fix a pinion seal leak. Sometimes they leak because the yoke gets rough areas that make small tears in the rubber part of the seal. Other times they leak because the inner part of the seal itself has failed.
Either way, a new seal will fix it when properly installed. It involves removing the driveshaft, pinion nut, washer, yoke, and then seal. Clean the housing & yoke well with a bit of emory cloth to remove any burrs or rough areas. Reinstalling the pinion nut is a critical measurement so I highly suggest sexyws6mama takes her car to a shop.
It is up to you to replace it or not. As long as the fluid is not dripping onto the ground, it is usually okay for a while...but for peace of mind, just get it fixed.
Also please use the FAQ at the very top of this page, Question #1 contains anything you'd ever have to know about pinion seals. It would have saved you time to look there first instead of waiting for replies.

Has the seal ever been replaced? I just fixed my pinion seal. I had the same problem. It was not from improper install, or a bad seal. The seal had, when gears were put in, been replaced before. There is one major difference in the seal I took out, and the one I used for replacement. I used the OEM GM replacement part, more expensive, but it comes with a rubbery kinda stuff around the outside of the seal, where it makes contact with the rear end housing. That keeps the seal from leaking there too, and the one I removed did not have that. Voila, the leak fixed! Probably a carquest part or something. Oh yeah, make sure when reinstalling the yoke, that you do not crush the sleeve anymore, that will change your pinion depth settings.

be sure you take it to a rear end shop Not a dealer...you need to find someone with real rear experiance...unless you like lots of BS.Number one thing to ask is do they use a torque wrench to check the bearing preload BEFORE and AFTER they install the seal...also a new crush collar and nut...if they balk or don't know ...FIND ANOTHER PLACE! You can't imagine the carnage and money that will be wasted if some AIR WRENCH JOCKY gets into yer rearend.I shit you not...i wasted 2k dollars because of two GM dealers screwing with my rearend. Its fixed now but it took a REAL rear mechanic to do the work right...MOST DEALER DON"T HAVE A TRAINED REAR END GUY....just forrest gump who says...YOU DON"T NEED NUFFIN BUTTA AIR GUN TO CHANGE THAT SEAL Lt.Dan.................

I went to get the pinion seal replaced and they started talking about a crush sleeve and how I need to get that replaced as well. Then he stated that I should probably have a diff service because my fluid smelt burnt.
I went to the shop to get the pinion sealed fixed and that's all I left the shop with.
Someone explain the other stuff to me please.

The crush sleeve isn't a bad idea, but it also is probably something you can live without. As far as smelling burnt. . .how many miles do you have on the car? And you aren't doing mroe doughnuts than a cop can eat in a month are you?
