    rear end

    i have a 02 ws6 its got 115000 mi how can you tell if the rear end is about to go some thing does not sound right back there:

    2002 trans am

    ive had some wierd sounds that i thijnk is comin from my rear end.. i got a clanking sound.. also sounds like a metal to metal rub... when i brake and start to slow down is when all of this happens..

    there hasent been a whistleing sound and i checked the brakes... that was my first guess.. idk where to look and wat to look for...

    The only way to firmly get a diognosis its to open it up and pop off the cover. have you checked the fluid lever lately? has it ever been serviced?

    ^Agreed. Have you regularly changed the differential fluid? Have you checked yet to see if the fluid is low?

    u joint or bearing. Im having the same issue but i know whats causing mine and its bearings. The mechanic i took my car to thought he knew how to swap out gears but messed it up. Gonna take it to another shop to get it fix, ofcourse the mechanic will be paying for the bill. I dont know if yours does this or not but when i let off the gas or come to a stop i can hear metal grinding metal like as if there is no fluid in the diff, i have the whining noise as well which i expect. If thats the case its your bearings more then likely especially when the speeds increase it gets louder.
